MasterChef Australia Season 14 Episode 53 Review: Battle of Pairs

MasterChef Australia Season 14 Episode 53 is called ‘Blind Pair Pantry Challenge’. We now have our top 6 – Julie, Billie, Alwin, Sarah, Keyma and Daniel. Judges Andy Allen, Melissa Leong and Jock Zonfrillo, explain the rules of the new challenge to the contestants. Whoever wins the Blind Pair Challenge will get a chance to be a part of the immunity challenge.

The synopsis reads, “Split into teams of two for the cook, contestants select two ingredients from two pantries but can’t see what their teammate is choosing.”

Every two contestants are randomly separated into three different colours – red, pink and yellow. Alwin and Keyma get the red apron, Billie and Julie are in the pink apron, and Daniel and Sarah are in the yellow team. However, there’s a twist in the pairing challenge. Contestants with the same colour apron will not be cooking together but against each other.

Each contestant with each apron will select two ingredients. The person wearing the same colour apron also has to select two ingredients. In the end, the cooks paired with that particular colour have to cook using the 4 selected ingredients.

Billie and Julie selected lemon, garlic, prawns and star anise. Dan and Sarah’s ingredients are fermented bean curd, steak, onions and asparagus. Alvin and Keyma picked fish sauce, chilli paste, habanero chillies and plantains. The contestants get one hour to cook a dish using the 4 ingredients and under bench staples. The best cook from each pair will get a chance to be in the immunity challenge tomorrow.

Sarah has never cooked with fermented bean curd picked up by Dan. So she’s a bit worried about how her dish will turn out. Similarly, Alwin has never used plantains before. Halfway to his cook, he is clueless about what he should do with the plantains. Dan is quite confident about his cook initially. However, as the time ends, he fails to plate his entire dish.

It’s tasting time in MasterChef Australia Season 14 Episode 53. The judges love dishes cooked by Sarah, Alwin and Julie. Sarah’s dish is Asparagus with Onion Puree and beef sauce. Alwin cooked Plantain Abacus Beads with Gochujang and fish sauce caramel. Julie made Prawn Ravioli pasta. These three cooks will get a chance to cook in the immunity challenge in the next episode.

Dan’s dish is Smokey rib-eye with asparagus and onion slaw. Keyma made Plantain steaks with gochujang sauce and plantain chips. Billie cooked Prawn Vol-au-Vents. The judges found some faults in the dishes cooked by these 3 contestants.

The Blind Pair Pantry Challenge was enjoyable and had a nice twist. We often see people with the same apron cooking together. But seeing them against each other brought out the fighter spirit in them. Now all eyes are on the immunity challenge and to see who will be the first contestant in the Top 5.
