Masoom Review: Boman Irani and Samara Tijori Intrigue Us in Hotstar’s Thriller Series

Masoom, a Hindi series on Hotstar, is now streaming. Directed by Mihir Desai and written by Satyam Tripathy, the show is inspired by the Irish series, Blood. The Hindi series stars Boman Irani, Samara Tijori, Upasana Singh, Manjari Fadnis, and Veer Rajwant Singh. The show has 6 episodes of 40 minutes approx.

The synopsis of the Hotstar Specials series reads, “A family, a secret from the past and shattered innocence – a person’s truth is never simple.”

Hotstar’s Masoom Review Contains No Spoilers

The first episode of Masoom starts with Sana (Samara Tijori) driving recklessly on the streets of Punjab’s Falauli. She tells herself not to forgive her father for his action. We learn that Sana worked in Delhi and returned home after her mother (Upasana Singh) died. Sana has 2 elder siblings, a sister and a brother, who were the first to see their mother dead.

Sana’s mother was already ill, bed-ridden and required a lot of care and attention. Sana believed that her mother’s death was not accidental but a murder. Her suspicions are towards her father, Balraj (Boman Irani), a doctor. Sana does everything to find proofs that her mother was killed. Her quest to find the truth unravels the dark secrets of the family.

From the first episode, Hotstar’s Masoom has a dark tone. Without wasting much time, we’ve shown the strained relationship between Sana and Balraj. With every episode, just like Sana, our doubts about Balraj keep growing. Even though Balraj’s actions are questionable, he’s very dedicated to his family and his kids, including Sana.

Balraj is aware that Sana is onto him and gathering proof against him. She doesn’t leave a chance to accuse him of murdering her mother. But not even once does he gets aggressive or scarily threaten her. All he does is warn her not to do anything that would hurt him and the family. That also appears creepy and leaves us worried about what big step he will take to shut his daughter’s mouth.

The show takes interesting twists and makes shocking revelations till the very last episode. Even though the show has a distressing mood, you look forward to seeing who’s the murderer.

Masoom on Hotstar is not just about murder; it also makes us question Balraj’s actions as a father. In one of the episodes, he takes the blame for a crime committed by one of his children. The series rightly shows to what extent parents will go to ensure their children are safe. But are the children safe from the same parent? We get the answers in the end.

Actors Boman Irani and Samara Tijori give a stellar act in the series throughout. Samara’s portrayal of a grieving, emotional and fierce Sana makes you feel her pain and loss. Boman gives yet another incredible performance as Balraj, the man who is the centre of attention for everything that’s gone wrong. Irani brings eeriness and mystery to his character. Upasana Singh’s character is a positive force in the show.
