Mashle Episode 12 Review- The Secret Revealed

This was a surprisingly okay ending to what has been, so far, an underwhelming season of anime. Despite featuring an element that was only introduced in the very final moments of the previous episode, Mashle Episode 12 proved that the show is at its best when it doesn’t take itself too seriously. That doesn’t look like a big realisation for a comedy show, but you would be surprised. Let us first talk about what worked in this episode before inevitably going to what did not.

There were several moments in this episode which individually made a lot of sense, even though they didn’t gel as well seen through the context of the whole episode. There were several moments between characters such as Able and Abyss, which absolutely came out of nowhere but still managed to leave a good impression. Abel has always been a better character than the show has given him credit for, and the generic bad-guy look did not suit him much. In this episode, he did a great job by being sympathetic exactly when he needed to be.

The storytelling in this episode was not anything special, as the dynamic between Abel and Abyss is that we have seen multiple times in the past. It also managed to somehow turn Mash into the next McGuffin the villains are going to attempt to capture. Despite being a weird development, this is still a plot device that can be used well to generate a lot of hype moments. What would it be generating the height moments for, you ask? Mashle Season 2, of course. Of all shows that could have been promised a sequel, this happens to be one of them.

Mashle Episode 12 was also funnier than the rest of the season. The jokes here landed way better because they were associated with a story that felt important despite having recently been introduced. The show was unpredictable for once because it was dealing with forces that it hadn’t made us aware of. When something unexpectedly funny happens in episodes like this, they tend to hit better than episodes where you don’t need to pay much attention because the plot is predictable.

Despite the series’ faults, of which there are many, its inoffensive nature and chill time made it a lot of fans, so much so that a season 2 has already been announced. Let’s hope that the overall quality of the show improves with the second season, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. This was a solid episode, which made me wonder how good this show could have been. The ceiling is still not very high, but anything would be an improvement over some things the show has now, like the opening and ending themes.
Verdict
Mashle Episode 12 did its best to end the series with a bang and came very close to being a decent enough finale that would make you want more from the show. Not a good idea, that.
