The reactions are fascinating because while the episode does not get a perfect score from all users, there is a pretty clear consensus that Episode 5 feels big. This is not just in the “more explosions, more superhero energy” sense, but it is seemingly the kind of episode where several mysteries that have been hanging around the show finally start clicking into place while Hal Jordan and John Stewart’s increasingly complicated relationship gets pushed into territory which is perhaps uncomfortable.
Episode 5 also delivers the Manhunters confrontation that the show has been building towards, with Zoe’s identity becoming impossible to ignore and Rushville descending into complete chaos, and X has a lot to say.
The Episode Cracked the Code For Some
Some viewers basically walked away from Lanterns Lights Out thinking the episode had cracked the Lanterns code. X user @yamato_kage23 called it “the greatest episode thus far”, praising the way the episode answers almost all of the questions that have been piling up while closing the door on several mysteries.
The user gave the episode a perfect score. The feeling of finally getting answers seems to be one of the biggest X reactions Episode 5 has generated. After the first half of the season collecting clues, suspicious behaviour, and increasingly weird details, Lights Out finally starts crashing into answers.
One of the important things about the episode is that people are not celebrating action but talking about John Stewart. John’s relationship with Hal has already been complicated; add Zoe, the Manhunter reveal, the Guardians, the right, and the questionable decisions flying around, and suddenly this is not just a straightforward superhero story any longer.
X user @Gh0stAnd0r described Episode 5 as more action-filled than the previous ones but highlighted the personal, non-power fight towards the end.
The distinction matters because superhero television can sometimes become obsessed with making every confrontation bigger but Lanterns seem to understand that the most interesting fight is sometimes just two people who have reached a point where talking is not going to fix anything.
Some Feel That Character Is Great Even When Spectacle Is Not
Not everyone was completely sold on the episode’s spectacle. User @ZeiSpaceKaiju gave the episode a 7/10, saying that it did not meet their expectations when it came to sight and that it left some obvious visual possibilities unexplored.
There was also an important “however”. They wrote, “Lanterns episode 5 doesn’t meet my hopes for its spectacle, sparing a lot of easy possibilities to show stuff we’d expect to see, a real shame. Tho, the character work in this episode is great. The tension and drama are still amazing.”
That is perhaps a very revealing reaction because the episode, Lights Out, seems to be working best when Lanterns remembers that its biggest weapon is not necessarily the ring but the characters.
People Expected John to Suit Up
Viewers apparently expected John to put on that suit, and it was visible in the X reactions. X user @jayothebandit wrote, “Lanterns EP 5 was one of the best episodes of superhero tv we’ve EVER seen.”
The user also admitted that they heard the expectation that John would suit up at the end of Episode 5, but the credits rolled, and they kept staring.
It Felt Like a Finale
@jNelajus summed up the structure of Episode 5 as intense, stressful and impactful, praising the mysteries it reveals while essentially finalising one arc and setting up the next three episodes.
The “chapter one is over” feeling is seemingly everywhere. Before this episode, we were investigating, and now we are dealing with the consequences.
Another user, @ThomasStorai, called the fifth episode the best episode of superhero television this year and praised its explosive action, emotional weight and shocking moments. User @InvincibleIntel was perhaps more enthusiastic with an 11/10 rating.

Behind all the ratings the users shared, the surprisingly consistent reaction was that the episode mattered: it moved the story, answered the questions, created new ones, gave characters consequences, delivered action, and left people desperate to know what happens next.
The Lights Out has an increasingly positive reaction and has left audiences getting the answers they were searching for since the first episode and thus screaming.
