Lady Chatterley’s Lover Ending Explained: Torrid Love Affair Discussions!

Lady Chatterley’s Lover is a romantic drama movie directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre and stars Emma Corrin, Jack O’Connell and Matthew Duckett, alongside other cast members. The movie has a runtime of 127 minutes and is based on the book by D.H. Lawrence.

Netflix’s description of the movie reads: “Unhappily married aristocrat Lady Chatterley begins a torrid affair — and falls deeply in love — with the gamekeeper on her husband’s country estate.”

Lady Chatterley’s Lover Plot

With big dreams in her eyes, Connie marries aristocrat Clifford, only for him to get injured in the war and get paralysed from the waist down. Unsatisfied and unhappy with her life and marriage and left lonely in a sprawling mansion all by herself, Connie starts a torrid affair with their gamekeeper Oliver and realises what true happiness and belonging feel like.

Lady Chatterley's Lover ending explained

A true-blue love story filled with discussions on class divide and the devastating effects of war, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, thankfully, ends in victory for our lovebirds.

Class divide finds a humbling mention in every scene of the movie, with Oliver, the gamekeeper of Clifford’s huge estate, addressing Connie as milady even though they share some of the most intimate moments together. He addresses her as such even after they have had multiple trysts together, with the notion of showing respect to a class above him being ingrained in Oliver since his younger years, as it may seem.

Clifford’s entire existence, of course, screams that he sees himself above the others, and he specifically mentions the same several times as well. He, especially, doesn’t see the mine workers as people who are on the same level as him and also mentions that they are farm animals who need to be herded. On the other side, too, it is true – the village folk, although caring about Connie, see her as someone above them, although she never distinguishes between the people she interacts with.

The war, too, plays a big role in the story. The movie shows us clearly that both Clifford and Oliver were in the military, and their time there has left some serious mental and psychological scars that they have not been able to handle effectively. The war changes people, and the different ways in which they have changed are evident in the two people Connie is closest to and has a bearing on whom she chooses to be with in the end.

But why do the townsfolk not about the torrid affair, because you’d expect it to be a matter of great gossip? When Mrs Bolton mentions to her friends the truth about the relationship, everyone is left a bit heartbroken for the two lovers. You don’t always hear of a woman with a title giving up everything to be with their lover. But Connie did just that for love, something that resonated with everyone – who doesn’t like a good love story?

What did Clifford mean when he said that he wanted Connie to choose the right person to have a baby with? Clifford, of course, not thinking about Connie or her feelings, asked her to have a baby with someone because he wouldn’t be able to have one with her. However, he wanted her wife to use someone just for that one purpose, she wasn’t supposed to have emotional attachments towards them. Connie wasn’t on-board with the idea in the first half of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, but afterwards, burdened with loneliness and boredom and wanting to form a connection, she fell for Oliver.

I think she didn’t plan to fall for him either; at first, it was probably just physical for her as well. But, with Oliver’s warmth and love, she started to melt and spend more time with him and found herself falling for him.

Why didn’t Clifford divorce Connie? You’d expect that after learning of your wife’s infidelity with the gamekeeper, a person would want a divorce, no questions asked. However, when Connie mentions divorce, Clifford takes it as a personal insult and as a sign of him having lost the battle. Losing your partner to someone else is definitely tough, and I imagine Clifford did love Connie in some way, but he didn’t love her in the way in which she wanted. Thus, when Connie makes it apparent that she doesn’t wish to fight for the relationship, Clifford refuses to be humiliated further.

I also think that there’s a power move in this – being his wife, he will always have some sort of a hold on her. It will definitely stop her from getting married again. Thus, it’s the last bit of control that he has over her.

Why did Connie’s father ask her not to leave Clifford? Interestingly, Connie’s father asks her to have as many affairs as she wants but asks her not to leave Clifford because, well, he’s rich and has a fancy title.
