The much-awaited teaser for Vishal Bhardwaj’s espionage drama Khufiya was released today. Starring Tabu, Ali Fazal, and Wamiqa Gabbi in the lead roles, the teaser hints at a spy story, wrap with the element of mystery and betrayal.
The one-minute twenty-four seconds long clip features a voiceover from Tabu, describing an unknown individual through poetic references. Moreover, the film will also mark Vishal Bhardwaj’s feature film return after Pataakha (2018).

The teaser starts off with a cryptic voiceover from Tabu, which minutely explains the identity of a young adult female. It uses poetry in the form of personification to explain things deeply. Furthermore, the tone becomes dark, when Tabu’s character speaks of a mole. The lyrical aspect of the teaser covers the bulk while protecting the visuals. Only a couple of scenes take over the screen throughout the dialogue. For instance, half of the clip showcases a woman under an umbrella, coming closer with each step.
After his Shakespearean adaptations, Vishal Bhardwaj has ventured into a new territory of dark and gritty espionage. His vision on-screen hints at a slow-burning spy thriller, that has much to be unwrapped. One can’t help but notice some Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Vibes with this one.
Tabu is mesmerizing and brilliant, even if it’s for a few seconds. Ali Fazal’s character is only shown through shadows cut, to keep the mystery in drapes. Wamiqa Gabbi can be seen vividly as the young adult whom Tabu describes in the teaser. Though what happens to her character, is left unsaid in the teaser.
The flick is Vishal Bhardwaj’s second OTT original after Amazon Prime’s Modern Love Mumbai. The series was produced as an anthology and received critical acclaim for several episodes. Including Bhardwaj’s short Mumbai Dragon.
As of now, the release date for Khufiya is yet to be revealed. However, it will arrive on Netflix this year.
