Karagar Part 2 Review: Underwhelming Follow-Up Disappoints

Karagar is a Bengali mystery-thriller TV series directed by Syed Ahmed Shawki and stars Chanchal Chowdhury, Intekhab Dinar, Tasnia Fareen, FS Nayeem and Afzal Hossain, alongside other cast members. Karagar part 2 has 7 episodes, each with a runtime of around 30 minutes.

Hoichoi describes the series as:

A PRISONER APPEARS IN AKASHNAGAR CENTRAL JAIL’S CELL NO.145, WHICH HAS BEEN SHUT FOR 50 YEARS, AND CLAIMS IMMORTALITY. WHO IS THIS MYSTERY MAN, AND WHAT SECRETS DOES HE HOLD INSIDE HIM?

– Karagar Part 2 Review Does Not Contain Spoilers –

Karagar Part 2 opens exactly where it ended in the last part, but this time we get somewhat of an answer about our mystery man. Who is he? What does he want? We get a few vague answers shrouded in history on the go. Does it help quench our thirst for answers? Not really – it only makes you want it more.

Karagar Part 1 created a mystery that left everyone shocked and hooked. I watched the first part being enamoured by the characters and the storyline as it was complicated enough for us not to know what direction the story can take.

Karagar Part 2

In part 2, we get a huge explanation for the why and a plan that is complicated enough to answer such a huge plot. With an excellent first part, expectations, thus, were just as high for the second part. And as much as I wanted to be just as in love with the second part, I must say that it doesn’t meet our expectations.

In the first part, Chanchal Chowdhury’s David does a fantastic job convincing us and them that there might be something mystical with him. He convinces everyone around him to work for his cause without much convincing. I wanted an answer to how that is possible – what special powers does this man have to get everyone to work for him in this insane plot? The answer, unfortunately, is very underwhelming.

The mystery-thriller, which swiftly turns out to be a revenge-thriller, is oddly convoluted and the explanations are drawn out and don’t hold on to the build-up that the first part created. You expected to be just as enamoured by David’s words just as everyone around him oddly is. Unfortunately, the series falls short of that promise and leaves you bloated with information.

Interestingly, the second part also has a lot of dialogue that weighs the runtime down. I zoned out sometimes with just so many things happening via just words. Although it’s interesting how the series joins history with David’s present, it never really reaches the thrill of the first part.

Karagar Part 2

Karagar Part 2 is very convoluted, and the end doesn’t justify the means, truly. As I previously mentioned, the extreme buildup of the first part fizzles out in this part. It almost felt like, to create a similar build-up, tried to create a storyline that was convoluted enough to justify the first part. It doesn’t and makes us question how David knows so much. We are simply asked to accept this fact and put it simply on research, but really, it doesn’t seem believable enough.

That being said, performances, as usual, are so good. Chanchal Chowdhury is a gem who does such great acting with only his eyes. Tasnia Farin, too, does her best as the woman stuck in her own jail. Unfortunately, though, her character doesn’t get the attention that you’d expect her to get and ends up being just another plot device. Weirdly, Fs Nayeem’s Ashfaq is as good as absent and gets no screen time.

Summing Up: Karagar Part 2

Karagar Part 2

Karagar Part 2 does not live up to the hype of the first part. Its explanation for the madness of the first part falls short of being shocking, engaging or thrilling. The explanation for the madness is underwhelming and leaves you rather confused. You don’t get all of your answers, which is also a major bummer and the answers you get seem rather… boring.

Karagar Part 2 is streaming on Hoichoi.
