Indian Matchmaking Season 3 Review: Arranged Marriage or Propaganda?

Indian Matchmaking is a dating reality TV show that follows Mumbai-based matchmaker Sima Taparia as she guides clients from the US and India to find suitable life partners. Indian Matchmaking season 3 has 8 episodes, each with a runtime of around 30 minutes.

In the first moment of season 3, after getting so much feedback from the last two seasons, the first thing Sima Aunty says to Priya, a London resident who is successful and independent, is that she can’t have so many needs and that she should be able to compromise. Because women should always be compromising and never have needs, especially when she is a divorcee because that is a huge disadvantage in 2023.

Of course, I am being sarcastic. My question, as with every show similar to this one, is – how do you see the feedback on social media and still continue to be absolutely terrible with the presentation? Sima Aunty continues to force her female clients to go for certain people even though they are not interested in them, telling them not to look at the physical aspects. But… physical attraction is very important in a relationship. And, on top of that – a no is a no.

I feel like the problem with Sima AUnty and Indian Matchmaking, in general, is that the matchmaker doesn’t understand the needs of her clients and jumps on the “you have to adjust” bandwagon too soon. However short the list may be, Sima Aunty doesn’t cut her clients any slack, and that’s where the problem lies.

The show, on the other hand, brings forth the weirdest flexes that are just so cringy to watch. At one point, it brings Bobby’s students on the show, and they talk about how math is easy, love is difficult and whatnot. It’s just not necessary for that conversation to be had with kids, you know? What I mean to say is – Indian Matchmaking season 3 is an extremely scripted and made-up show wherein even the clients’ conversations don’t feel genuine.

Sima Aunty drones on and on about having to compromise for a healthy marriage and giving up on your ideals and how the ideal marriage age is 30. Anything more than that is unacceptable. Thankfully she’s up from 24, which was her previously “perfect age”. That being said, even the clients aren’t all hunky dory. Sometimes you feel unnerved by their list of demands and expectations from others and the fact that some of them are quick to judgements.

It’s mostly an infuriating watch still and actually makes Indians look bad. I am not living under the rock that India and Indian marriages are super progressive in 2023. But it’s upsetting to see that those living outside also think about meaningless and sometimes insulting things when it comes to finding their significant others. I think the contestants of the reality show, in the present, are more subtle with their hypocrisy than what we say in season 1. But by no means is it the ideal situation.

Sima Aunty’s personal life is something that comes up sporadically throughout the series, and it’s the blandest thing anyone can ever see. It’s just scripted, and if you’ve seen the previous seasons, you will realise that it’s the same stories that they are continuously recycling. On top of that, watching the elite of society come up with their oftentimes odd hangups might be triggering for many audiences. I also wonder why they ended the show as abruptly as they did. I almost thought there would be another episode to tie some of the unfinished stories but was redirected to the first episode of season 1!

The problem with Indian Matchmaking, however, is that it glorifies arranged marriages. If you’re someone who wants to go through this experience on your own volition, that’s good for you. But let’s not pretend that this is the way to go or that marrying someone after seeing that person for an hour once is the ideal life. Sima Aunty’s (and the show’s as well) attitude surrounding the thing is the ick factor here.

Although sure, the show does bring forth that people you meet on dating apps from another religion can be your soul mate. But let’s just never pretend that the marriages worked in our previous generations because no one had any needs, and everyone simply listened to their parents and adjusted and compromised together. It’s well documented how women went through abuse in many cases just to keep their marriages going – they didn’t have the backing to leave that this generation’s women have. They weren’t independent to up and leave, and that’s not something you’d want to teach people or push to come back.

People’s liberation and independence are always good things. Equality makes the world a better and safer place for everyone – let’s just keep that in mind before we make blanket statements, eh Sima Aunty?

Indian Matchmaking Season 3 Review: Final Thoughts

Watching Indian Matchmaking season 3, as usual, is a herculean task of keeping your calm and not throwing hands at the TV. You constantly have to remind yourself that this is reality TV. However, with the horror stories that we see surrounding marriages in India, it’s hard to take these things lightly. I don’t know whether the show can be a guilty secret for people, but it’s definitely an infuriating watch by all means.

Indian Matchmaking season 3 is streaming on Netflix.
