Hyper Knife Review

In this thrilling Disney+ drama, we follow an ambitious neurosurgeon and her mentor butting heads years after he disgraced her for her bold ideas. The drama puts forth a complex narrative that weaves in and out of two people’s lives with giant egos and an even greater talent for performing life-altering surgeries.

The series is a thrilling ride from start to end, with no dull moment in sight. Its tense atmosphere grips you from the moment it starts and holds your attention from one episode to the next. The storytelling is excellent, as are the beautiful visuals that are nothing short of haunting. Every scene is laced with a threatening aura that is difficult to look away from. The series builds tension as it goes, holding its cards close to its chest but doing a fantastic job of giving away pertinent information that hooks viewers.

A major part of the series is the relationship between Jung Se-ok and Choi Deok-hee, two brilliant people with differing opinions on a few things. Interestingly enough, as the episodes move on, it also becomes quite clear that some very interesting things are similar to these characters. It’s a battle of the greats with these two, but the tension and chemistry that they share is more than just a clash of egos. There are emotions underneath that two passionate people, especially a mentor and mentee, can share.

Obviously, I don’t mean anything romantic, but the chemistry that they share is something more than just romance. It’s thrilling to witness the push and pull between them. It’s also what makes the story intense. However, I will mention here that everything is not great throughout. Actually, the series falls short in a few areas that take away from making it truly fantastic. The characters are all over the place and sometimes don’t make sense. There’s a lot of plot armour as well that stops the growth and believability of the story immensely. I had the most problems with Yoon Chan-young’s Seo Young-joo, whose entire character is “sidekick” and nothing less.

And since the characters are so shallow, the complicated storyline and storytelling aspects lose their way and become uninteresting soon enough. Don’t get me wrong, it continues to be quite thrilling, but the story doesn’t stick as much as you’d expect or want it to. Thus, it falls off towards the mid point, becoming a bit repeitive and unnecessarily annoying. I think the problem is also that the characters lack fepth and nuance but a long shot, which makes them a bit cringy and uninspired. But, kudos to the creators for getting into something interseting and different.

The best parts about Hyper Knife, however, are its performances. Park Eun-bin is simply fantastic as Jung Se-ok. She not only showcases her emotions beautifully, but is surprisingly vulnerable with her half-baked character. She’s even quite scary sometimes and will give you goosebumps in certain situations. Other than her, we have Sul Kyung-gu who is also great in his role, although I must say that his character is what stops him from being truly memorable in the series.

The Hyper Knife ending truly has me confused about where the series tried to go with its storyline and what truly sealed its fate. Although it started off fantastic, the ending is oddly melodramatic, unnecessary and sappy. Surprisingly boring bu with great performances, the series drones on in the last few episodes and leaves us thoroughly disappointed. I am surprised this is where the series took itself — it’s so silly!

Hyper Knife's downfall is its ending that hardly makes sense in the grander narrative and the fantastic story that it had started out with.
