The lovechild of a cooking show and a survival drama, Chef Vs Wild shows some absurd levels of extremes when it comes to being a reality show in its latest trailer. Not only the audiences are in for a treat to be introduced to some new-age and unique unscripted tales but, also learn some survival as well as culinary skills.
Chef Vs Wild is being produced by Leftfield Pictures and David Chang in collaboration with Vox Media Studios. It will feature two chefs, who will act as contestants being helicoptered and dropped in the wilderness. They are going to be to source all their cooking ingredients from the woods to create a fine-dine meal. The contestants are going to be paired up with an outdoor expert, who is a survivalist, who will help them from being poisoned, killed and lost in the wilderness.
The judges for Chef Vs Wild are chef and adventurer Kiran Jethwa and wild foods expert Valerie Segrest. These are the two people who will be tasting the final meal that our contestants will put up in front of them. The winner, surely, takes home some bragging rights and all the learning experience from the wild.

Hulu’s description for Chef Vs Wild reads: “Reaching the peak of the culinary world has never been this demanding. In each episode of “Chefs Vs Wild,” two different world-class chefs will be dropped into the wilderness where they’ll embark on a gruelling and unprecedented mission—survive and forage enough wild ingredients to create a restaurant-worthy, five-star meal. Episodes will culminate in the chefs going head-to-head in a “wilderness kitchen,” using their foraged ingredients and ingenuity to create savoury dishes and, ultimately, impress the judges.”

As a survivalist participant in the Hulu series Chefs vs Wild, Episode 2, I can attest that the challenge was far more extreme than the show presented.
We were dropped in the BC woods during late October/November (we were there for Halloween). Record breaking rains had soaked the entire region. Major highways had washed out, people were being rescued by helicopter, it was a serious storm.
No hunting or fishing was allowed on our episode.
As survivalists, we were extremely restricted as to what we could bring. No food, no matches/lighters, no multitool, no tent, no sleeping pad, no utensils or cups.
We were allowed a knife, small saw, axe, 4’x6′ tarp (just one) and a 2 quart pot for boiling water. The chefs just showed up with a knife and their clothes.
The first time I met my chef Nico was in the forest after we were dropped off.
The HUGE dilemma, everytime we found something edible, was whether to eat it or send it in for the cooking competition. We sent almost everything in.
So that explains why everyone was so wrung out by the time the cook-off happened.
I’m not sure why they didn’t stress this in the final edit. It was significantly tougher than it looked which is unusual in the TV world.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
Cheers from Alaska,
Greg Chaney
PS The edit made Nico look like a klutz, not true, she was very capable and resilient.
