House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 2 Review

House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 2 might just be the longest episode of this season and, rightly so. Grief requires time and reflection. It encourages anger and hasty decisions as it gives you a vision for setting a long-term goal. The second episode of HoTD is all that and, then some more.

The episode opens with different people affected by Jaehaerys death weeping, angry or speculating about what ideally was planned by the killers. As Alicent cries about what has happened to not only her grandson but, also her daughter Helaena it might just be the first time we see how deeply concerned she is about her children. Aegon is angry and, this is the moment where Tom Glynn-Carney shines as an actor- the pain of a father and the defeat of a monarch all mixed in one raging ball of hate and anger.

With the death of Jaehaerys, Otto Hightower finds another opportunity to weaken Rhaenyra’s claim to the throne by displaying the dead body of the child through a funeral march and spreading the word of the cruelty done. It is shallow and shrewd but, ultimately the move is made. We are soon connected with the grieving mother Helaena and, the entire funeral march scene with her in it makes it unbearably sad. It would be right to say that House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 2 let the grief and sombre breath like freshly baked bread.

As the above takes place in King’s Landing, we have Rhaenyra shocked by what has happened. It does not take her long to figure out that Daemon is behind the killing which hurts her. But she also gets the clarity about where Daemon’s loyalty lies- with himself. After an enraged fight between the two married silver hairs, we are left with most of the characters grappling for some sensibility and rest. But one haste decision is always followed by another in this franchise and, this time Team Green strikes.

House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 2: Final Thoughts

Overall, House of the Dragon Season Episode 2 was well-paced and laid out the pieces of the big civil war in pieces. There is so much insight we get on characters starting from Aegon and Halaena’s marriage on the sour to Aemond’s relationship with Madam Sylvie to Rhaenyra’s heartbreak and Rhaenys-Corlys progression. It served its characters well and, gave the audience the complex human beings that the franchise has always been praised for.
