Don’t Listen (2020)

It is a supernatural horror thriller film directed by Ángel Gómez Hernández. Its cast features Rodolfo Sancho, Ana Fernández, Ramón Barea, and Belén Fabra, among others. In the film, after a tragic turn of events at the new home he’s fixing up, Daniel hears a ghostly plea for help, spurring him to seek out a famous paranormal expert.

Upon moving into a new home with their 9-year-old son Eric, Daniel and Sara are upended by psychophonies, first experienced by Eric and thus attributed by a psychologist to the kids’ lack of stability and his own imagination. Seasoned parapsychologist Germán and his daughter Ruth (a sceptic sound engineer) turn in to provide help to Daniel. You can watch this film on Netflix.

Verónica (2017)

Verónica is another supernatural horror film directed by Paco Plaza which stars Sandra Escacena alongside Claudia Placer, Bruna González, Iván Chavero and Ana Torrent. It is loosely based on true events from the 1991 Vallecas case where Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro died mysteriously after she used an ouija board.

The film follows in 1991 Madrid, after holding a séance at school, a teen girl minding her younger siblings at home suspects an evil force has entered their apartment. It is available to watch on Netflix.

Julia’s Eyes (2011)

Julia, a woman suffering from a degenerative sight disease, finds her twin sister Sara, who has already gone blind as a result of the same disease, hanged in the basement of her house. Everything points to suicide, but Julia is compelled to investigate what she feels is a murder case.

It is a psychological thriller film directed by Guillem Morales and written by Morales and Oriol Paulo. It was produced by Guillermo del Toro, Joaquín Padró and Mar Targarona. Starring Belén Rueda, Lluís Homar, Pablo Dequi and others. You can watch this film on Amazon Prime Video.

Rec (2007)

Rec is a found footage horror film co-written and directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza. The film stars Manuela Velasco as a reporter who, with her cameraman, accompanies a group of firefighters on an emergency call to an apartment building to discover an infection spreading inside, with the building being sealed up and all occupants ordered to follow a strict quarantine.

The synopsis of the film reads, “A television reporter and cameraman follow emergency workers into a dark apartment building and are quickly locked inside with something terrifying.” You can watch this film on Amazon Prime Video.

The Platform (2019)

Inside a vertical prison system, inmates are assigned to a level and forced to ration food from a platform that moves between the floors. Directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, The Platform is a twisted social allegory about mankind at its darkest and hungriest. It is a social science fiction horror film set in a large, tower-style Vertical Self-Management Center.

Its residents, who are switched every month between its many floors, are fed via a platform which, initially filled with food at the top floor, gradually descends through the tower’s levels, stopping for a fixed amount of time on each. The system inevitably leads to conflict, as the residents at the top levels get to eat as much as they can, with each level getting only the leftovers from the previous ones.
