With the release of the Gangubai Kathiawadi trailer, it is no wonder that no one can hold their horses. The film has been delayed a considerable number of times now, thus the trailer released has regenerated all the hype that has been surrounding witnessing Alia Bhatt in a never seen before role. The film is a biographical crime drama produced and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali with Jayantilal Gada also serving as the producer. The film is an adaptation of one of the chapters of Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai.
Dear Zindagi actress Alia Bhatt plays the title character Gangubai “Ganga” Harjivandas, also known as Kothewali or Kathiawadi. In this film, Bhatt transforms to play the role of a female mafia don and the madam of a brothel in Kamathipura (one of Mumbai’s redlight areas). The other cast members include Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari, Seema Pahwa, Varun Kapoor, Jim Sarbh and Shanu Kumar. Popular actors such as Ajay Devgn, Huma Qureshi and Emraan Hashmi appear in the film in special cameo roles.
As per the Gangubai Kathiawadi trailer, we see Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai holding her headstrong and high irrespective of the society bashing her. Making her way into politics and giving us flashbacks to her origin story to reach the stature where she stands, Gangubai takes over the audience completely. The trailer also hints at Vijay Raaz’s character playing the main antagonist in this story.

Ajay Devgn, who is supposed to appear in a cameo in the role of Lala, a person Gangu encounters while she is still young in her brothel days. With a feminist angle wrapped to the story, the trailer shows Gangu’s fight to let the young brothel girls get an education that they rightly deserve. Shantanu Maheswari appears in the trailer as a would-be groom and, Jim Sarbh also appears in the trailer and, we can presume he plays a quirky lawyer/Gangu’s educated hand.

With the much-anticipated trailer out, we hope to see the film soon. Gangubai Kathiawadi will have its world premiere at 72nd Berlin International Film Festival, held from 10 to 20 February 2022. It will get its theatrical release on 25 February 2022 in Hindi along with dubbed Telugu versions simultaneously.
