Erin Brockovich (2000)
A legal biographical drama- sounds interesting, right? Well, with a woman at its centre, we can assure you that this film might just be one of the most intriguing Julia Roberts films you will ever come across. Directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Susannah Grant, it is based on the true story of the titular character who fought against the energy corporation Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and how they were responsible for the Hinkley groundwater contamination incident. The Help (2011)
If this 2011 film does not fill your heart with sadness, love and pride, we do not know what will. A period drama based on Kathryn Stockett’s 2009 novel of the same name, The Help stars Jessica Chastain, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard, Allison Janney, Octavia Spencer, Emma Stone and Sissy Spacek in major roles. Tate Taylor is the director of the film along with being the screenplay writer where the story revolves around a young and aspiring white woman who writes about the racism the black maids face as domestic helps in the white household during the Civil Rights Movement in 1963 Jackson, Mississippi. Brave (2012)
An animated film that should be the rule book for every girl to grow up should be the 2012 film Brave. The sheer brilliance of this film is, is absolutely inspiring to the bone. Created by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, the screenplay for the film is by Mark Andrews, Steve Purcell, Brenda Chapman and Irene Mecchi. Actors Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, Julie Walters, Robbie Coltrane, Kevin McKidd and Craig Ferguson lend their voices to the little animated characters. Wild (2014)
A biographical film with adventure and self-discovery at its core, Wild is directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and stars Reese Witherspoon in the main role along with Laura Dern, Thomas Sadoski, Michiel Huisman, Gaby Hoffmann, Kevin Rankin, and W. Earl Brown. Based on the 2012 memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, the film is about a solo backpacking trip that author Cheryl Strayed went on after the trail in 1995 due to several personal issues. Little Women (2019)
A masterpiece of a book and a film, the 2019 film Little Women screams for women’s empowerment and feminism with the perfect dash of tragedy and love. The coming-of-age period drama is written and directed by Greta Gerwig and chronicles the lives of the March sisters during the 19th century.
