Fantastic Beasts 3: Is Third Time the Charm?

Fantastic Beasts The Secrets of Dumbledore is set several years after the incident of the second Fantastic Beasts film. Gellert Grindelwald is out there raising a dark wizard army with the vision to take over the muggle world and, make sure that wizards become the most supreme beings on the planet. Now with the elections for the Supreme Head of the International Federation of Wizards knocking around the corner, Albus Dumbledore must do something before Grindelwald’s plans come to fruition.

Dumbledore turns around to our beloved Magizoologist Newt Scamander, his brother Theseus Scamander, Newt’s longtime assistant- Bunty, our muggle friend Jacob Kowalski, the Ilvermorny professor- Lally Hicks and, Leta Lestrange’s brother Yusuf Kama for help, forming an unlikely team of allies to save the world from Grindelwald’s dark plan. But, with Credence in his grips, will Dumbledore, Newt and his team be successful in overcoming the impending doom and saving the world?

Well, Fantastic Beasts The Secrets of Dumbledore takes its time to unwrap the mystery, thrill and adventure. The screenplay and narrative are definitely stronger and better than Fantastic Beasts 2 but are not always engaging enough. The first half of the film is rather slow and it feels tiring to understand where the story is heading. Fortunately for us, the second half is where the entire story starts to pull itself up and give us the magic, drama and expositions we have been waiting for. Yet there are certain loopholes that keep you wondering.

Although the script cannot save the day, the incredible chemistry among the characters does. Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander is yet again a delight to behold! He is shy but also brave, honest but never hurtful and, that is what makes the character extremely unique and amiable. With the sprinkle of Redmayne’s acting genius, Newt truly becomes an iconic character in this movie that the audiences will always cherish.

Mads Mikkelsen, who has taken on the role previously crowned to Johnny Depp, does a fine job in bringing out his inner Hannibal whenever required and giving us exactly what we need. Jude Law surprisingly offers a vulnerable yet strong Dumbledore which might be new for fans but, leaves a new door for us open to explore the character rather deeply. Newt and Dumbledore’s friendship gets more fleshed out and we even get a sneak peek into Aberforth’s life and more. Dan Fogler, Ezra Miller, Jessica Williams and others also deliver enjoyable performances.

The music and cinematography stand out in this film. And, so does the VFX. Lally’s spells, the mirror world where Dumbledore takes Credence and Grindelwald are all beautifully done. Even the qilin is as adorable as real.

Fantastic Beasts The Secrets of Dumbledore: Final Verdict

Overall, Fantastic Beasts The Secrets of Dumbledore is a good attempt in saving the franchise and, offer the audiences something to look forward to. Nonetheless, if you are not familiar with the Potterverse, the film will not hold your attention but, for Wizarding World fans, this film is another stepping stone in knowing the story that came before The Boy Who Lived. With great performances, amazing VFX and, a story that you can more or less predict, Fantastic Beasts 3 is a film that weaves its magic through friendship, family and love.
