Eternals take place after Avengers: Endgame. But it introduces us to the celestial beings created by Arishem to protect the Earth against the Deviants. We also find out why they didn’t interfere when Thanos wiped away half the population of the Earth.

By the end of Eternals, we find out that Arishem lies to these celestial beings. Arishem planted them to protect the planet as he wanted to cause the Emergence of Celestials on the planet. The Emergence would cause the entire planet to explode. However, Sersi (Gemma) and her fellow Eternals decide to go against Arishem and save the planet. They also have to fight Ikaris (Richard), one of their own who believes they should follow whatever is being told to them.

At the end of the film, Arishem captures Sersi, Kingo (Kumail) and Phastos (Brian). He warns them that he will be studying their memories and judge if the people on Earth are worth saving or not. On the other hand, Thena, Druig and Makkari are waiting for their friends to show up. That’s when we get to see the first post-credit scene.
