Doctor G Review: A Gynaecologist Appointment That’s Okay to Miss

Doctor G stars Ayushmann Khurrana Dr Uday Gupta, Shefali Shah as Dr Nandini Srivastav, Rakul Preet Singh as Dr Fatima Siddiqui, Indraneil Sengupta as Dr Ashok, Sheeba Chaddha as Lakshmi Devi Gupta (Uday’s mother). Directed by Anubhuti Kashyap, the story is by Sourabh Bharat and Vishal Wagh. The screenplay is by Sumit Saxena (dialogues), Saurabh Bharat, Vishal Wagh and Anubhuti Kashyap. The runtime is of 124 minutes.

The cinematography is by Eeshit Narian, and the editing is by Prerna Saigal. Ketan Sodha composed the background score, and the music was by Amit Trivedi, Amjad Nadeem Aamir and Sultan Sulemani. The synopsis reads, “A medical campus comedy-drama, Doctor G is about the hilarious struggles of Dr. Uday Gupta, who wanted to specialise in Orthopaedic, but is stuck in an all-female class of Gynaecology. Will he change his department, or will the department change him?”

Doctor G Movie Review Contains Mild Spoilers

In Doctor G, Uday Gupta wants to study Orthopaedic, like his mentor Ashok. However, Uday doesn’t get enough scores and has to opt for gynaecology. Uday is unhappy about studying gynaecology as he believes he can’t treat something he doesn’t have. Dr Nandini is Uday’s professor and a gynac who often calls him out for his disinterest in the field. She tells him to lose his male touch to become a trustworthy male gynaecologist.

Will Uday Gupta manage to sustain in the department of gyno? We find out what happens in the end.

The introduction scene of Uday Gupta shows that he has a prejudiced mind towards what men and women should do. Hence, when he forcibly opts to story gyno, he keeps whining about how it’s not a field for man. To prove his point, the makers have shown a scene where the girls bully him on his first day. That adds to his constant ranting and acting like a victim.

To compensate for Uday’s whining part, Kashyap has also called out the character for his wrong behaviour. For example, when Uday saves a pregnant lady’s life and safely delivers her baby, his classmates celebrate with sweets and cheer for him. Nandini questions them why there’s a celebration for doing their job as doctors.

But in the next scene, we are forced to feel good for Uday when the lady also names her son Uday. It cancels out the discussion of seeing male gynos as reliable as women gynacs. I wondered why is special treatment given to Gupta.

Another problem with Doctor G was the incidents that led to Uday’s change of heart. Initially, the girls in his class try to motivate him, especially Rakul’s Fatima. I understand that one might feel discouraged to be in a field when they have no interest. But even if they decide to stay, the efforts should come from within at one point. When Nandini tells Uday to lose his male touch, he’s confused about what it means. One hopes he’d try to understand what Nanindi meant, but as they say – never expect too much.

The first half ends with Uday valuing the field he is in. But the story goes downhill in the second half. The entire second half is focused on a young girl and her sufferings. At the expense of the girl’s life, Uday learns to lose his male touch. So, the story’s main character, throughout, takes no measures to change or learn anything by himself.

The story is very much on the surface and fails to give a conclusion to the “issue” it tries to address. Uday Gupta is stubborn and narrow-minded, doesn’t listen to women around him and looks up to the wrong people as inspiration. His character entirely depends on the women around him to teach right and wrong. Sadly, a grown-up man in the story uses his brain only at the film’s end.

The movie has lots of issues, but Sheeba Chadda, as Uday’s mother, manages to generate a lot of laughs. We have seen Ayushmann Khurrana tackle social issues in many movies now. His performance is good but repetitive. Shefali Shah as Nandini made a lot of sense. It’s another 2022 movie where Rakul Preet Singh is wasted again! The forced romance between Ayushmann and Rakul is more awkward than romantic.

Doctor G Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, Doctor G doesn’t do justice to the issue it tries to bring up. The performances are good, but the music is average. The second half feels like a crime thriller, disconnected from the main subject. It’s a gynaecologist appointment that is okay to miss because it doesn’t have anything significant to tell.
