With only two episodes left in the Kdrama series, the anticipation is quite high as many secrets are yet to be unveiled. Divorce Attorney Shin Trot Songs
Nam Jin: It’s Me
The song featured in the initial episodes of the drama and almost became the introductory track for the lead character Shin Sung-han. It’s first heard in the car when he is travelling to his work and then later at his house, after a long day. This song perfectly summarises the lead’s character as the song lyrics suggests that it’s about a man who, even if he is having a bad day, is still a survivor who will continue to push through and ignore fate, so when he wakes up another day, it may be better.
The song was released in 2008 on the Happiness album by trot singer Nam Jin. Even though the song sounds like a peppy dance track which is akin to the Trot genre, the lyrics have a deeper sometimes melancholic meaning.
Na Hoon-a: Brother Tes (테스형)
Brother Tes or Brother Socrates is one trot song that many viewers might be aware of if they watch Korean content avidly. Released in 2020 on A Tale of Nine Stories album of the veteran singer Na Hoon-a, the song has been a massive hit since its release and to see Sung-han belt out the notes made it all the more funnier – while calling on Socrates and asking why life is so hard.
This song definitely gets the listeners engrossed in it, as Sung-han does and gets interrupted by his neighbour to keep it down.
Shin Seung Hun: After a Long Time (그후로 오랫동안)
This song was featured in episode 2 and showed the impeccable chemistry and friendship between the three lead characters. Chosen by Jung Moon-sung’s character Jo Jung Shik to sing while drinking with his friends, soon he is joined by the other two who can’t keep themselves from overtaking the microphone.
A change from the peppy trot songs, this sweet ballad has melancholic lyrics where the singer compares his sad tears with the rain.
Kang Seung-mo: Heartless Blues (무정 부르스)
This song was said to be one of Shin Sung-han’s favourite songs in episode 7 and also plays in the flashbacks when he is wallowing in his feelings, after Ju-hwa’s demise. The song became the character’s uplifting song, urging him to keep moving forward in life.
Kang Seung-mo is a Korean singer who debuted in 1983. The song was first released in his first album but was re-released in 1991 and has become a classic favourite among the public. The lyrics suggest that a person is heartbroken over their partner leaving them but they rather reminisce about the good memories of them and will move ahead in life keeping them in mind, rather than the hurt.
The song resonated with Sung-han’s situation when he was completely hopeless with nothing to look forward to in life, as well as with Ma Chun-seok’s case, who only wanted to spend a good time with his wife and the kid – even if it wasn’t his.
Divorce Attorney Shin is currently streaming on Netflix and is released every Saturday and Sunday at 10:30 PM KST (tvN) or 08:30 PM IST.
