With Kanoko getting more and more honest with herself about her true feeling for Nagomu during the autumn months, we have finally arrived at the winter season. With Mitsuru as the rival, where is this (love) story going? Let’s find out more in this review of Deaimon Episode 9.
Deaimon Episode 9 Overview

Deaimon is a slice of life, gourmet, and drama anime focusing on a Japanese sweets shop. A guy returns home after 10 years to take care of the shop, and his father’s proclaimed declining health. He is surprised to find a young girl working there, who is claimed by everyone to be the heir to the shop. The anime shows their daily life interactions and various journeys they have taken to end up here at the traditional sweets store in Kyoto. Deaimon is based on a manga written by Rin Asano.
The anime adaptation is developed by Studio Encourage Films, an outfit that has produced many other anime such as Etotama, Hitorijime My Hero, and Isekai Cheat Magician. The show is being produced with Fumitoshi Oizaki (A Centaur’s Life, Etotama) serving as director, Reiko Yoshida (Blue Period, A Silent Voice) supervising the scripts, and Sakae Shibuya (Girl Friend Note, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) designing the characters and overseeing the animation.

Deaimon Episode 9 Review- The Journey Till Now!

As the show is progressing, so is the romance between the main characters. The previous episode of Deaimon specifically focused upon Nagomu and Kanoko, their relationship, and how it began, progressed, and ended. Despite the seemingly abrupt ending, neither of them are holding any grudges against each other, solidifying the premise of the breakup is a misunderstanding. Kanoko seems to be more aware of this, and so are many people around them. But our main character Nagomu continues to be as dense as ever.
Deaimon Episode 9 starts months after the previous episode had finished. From Halloween, we are now witnessing the arrival of Christmas. In Japan, rather than a religious viewpoint, Christmas is often regarded as more of a holiday festival associated with snow, the end of the year, and in a romantic sense in the case of young couples. Coincidentally, the Christmas and romance plots are falling into place simultaneously. An example of brilliant writing, I must say!

This episode of Deaimon weaved in many different plots explored until now. From Hiiro’s funnily biased devotion to her mentor and her “perfectionist” approach to Saki’s crossdressing reference and his listening ears. We are shown a heartwarming memory of Nagomu with his now-deceased grandfather. Accompanying it was some usual Nagomu trademarked, lighthearted comedic scenes. Even Itsuka’s mother makes an appearance in this episode, and it seems like nothing much has changed with her nervous self either.
The love triangle is back again in Deaimon Episode 9, and the cause is none other than Nagomu himself! Despite it, he is as dense as ever. This is quite hilarious, as in general, Nagomu’s character is depicted as very perceptive and empathetic. Kanoko’s general acceptance of her true feelings and trying to compete with Mitsuru, who is just a teenager, often leads to some hilarious scenarios.

With this being the first episode in the winter months, the season was represented well. From the colourful and snow-filled background arts to the characters’ outfits, everything screamed December. Though the plot did not proceed in terms of the progress of the story, it rather took a breather to blend in all the stories we have heard up to here. We also get to hear Nagomu sing in this episode, which was quite the Christmas bonus as it replaced the ending theme song!

Prognosis
Accompanied with the Christmas vibes and a medley of characters, Deaimon Episode 9 was a good episode to pause and feel good about the events up to date.
