Kanoko seemed to have settled in Kyoto, and we can guess the reason why! Everyone around Kanoko knows it too. Well, almost everyone! Deaimon Episode 8 presents us with the beginning of her story with Nagomu. Let’s find out more in this review!

Deaimon Episode 8 Overview

deaimon episode 8- witch itsuka

Deaimon is a slice of life, gourmet, and drama anime focusing on a Japanese sweets shop. A guy returns home after 10 years to take care of the shop and his father’s proclaimed declining health. He is surprised to find a young girl working there, who is claimed by everyone to be the heir to the shop. The anime shows their daily life interactions and various journeys they have taken to end up here at the traditional sweets store in Kyoto. Deaimon is based on a manga written by Rin Asano.

The anime adaptation is developed by Studio Encourage Films, an outfit that has produced many other anime such as Etotama, Hitorijime My Hero, and Isekai Cheat Magician. The show is being produced with Fumitoshi Oizaki (A Centaur’s Life, Etotama) serving as director, Reiko Yoshida (Blue Period, A Silent Voice) supervising the scripts, and Sakae Shibuya (Girl Friend Note, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) designing the characters and overseeing the animation.

Deaimon Episode 8 Review- Emotional Ride Into The Past

deaimon episode 8- kanoko and nagomu meet again

A new addition to the cast in the previous episode was a great move in the series. Until that point, we had seen many workers of the local sweets shop of various age groups. All of them seemed to be good and diligent people, skilled at their work (well, Nagomu is getting there). The introduction of Hiiro presented us with the fact that, just like with any other field, being good at making wagashi is challenging. Being a perfectionist, it is difficult for her to keep learning a skill that takes years to excel in. Not everyone in this industry is a talented, patient wizard.

The various interactions during the wagashi-making workshop helped us provide a little insight into Nagomu’s thinking. We know he is always smiling, whatever the situation might be. His thoughts are not always shown- like how he might have felt when Itsuka was declared an heir to the shop or when his parents chid him constantly. Though, his non-judgemental and helpful personality helps him bond with seemingly everyone he crosses paths with. This episode further strengthens this argument. We are presented with Kanoko’s memories of the time she had spent together with Nagomu in Tokyo- and they are lovely!

Deaimon Episode 8 focused on the story of our main couple in a flashback memory. Deaimon is not a romance anime, but the story between Nagomu and Kanoko is so well written that it might as well be one. It’s a relationship that was built on a great foundation. Their breakup was a misunderstanding, and Kanoko seems to be wanting to clear it up. It feels like this patch-up is taking forever, though this series is a slow burn so might as well sit back and enjoy the ride!

The main couple’s story revealed in Deaimon Episode 8 was animated beautifully. From their first random meeting to showing their gradual progress in their relationship to the abrupt end, everything in the story flowed well. The breakup was a must need for both of them to realize the bigger picture and grow out of a few habits, and be with each other in the long term. The memories had a vintage-tinted color scheme, with smooth music in the background. Kanoko and Nagomu’s time spent together was not shown with words, but with a background sound that touched our hearts.

The episode was not all just heartfelt, old memories. We got a good dose of comedy in Deaimon Episode 8. We get a few glimpses of Nagomu’s band. Its origin story is as funny as it is emotional. And even though the band is now disbanded, the members have a strong bond, as depicted in this episode of Deaimon. The chestnut headgear plays an important role in the comic scenes and ends up as a sign of friendship. This week also presented the release of the full version of the opening theme song, adding to the already great episode.
