Who is David Spade?

David Spade is an American comedian, who became a well-known figure through his stint on Saturday Night Live show in the 1990s. Initially, started as a writer and moved up to regular cast member. Further, he acted in various slapstick comedy films like the Grownups franchise, The Do-Over and Netflix’s The Wrong Missy to name a few.

He also hosted a late-night talk show, Lights Out with David Spade on Comedy Central from July 2019 to March 2020. He has an observational style of comedy that relies on razor-sharp sarcasm and self-deprecation.

The Standup Review: Don’t worry it’s Nothing Personal

David Spade’s nothing personal ironically started with a personal anecdote where someone tried to hug him. Hug? Really? In the current times with a stranger? Sounds out of question right? Maybe a fist bump but nothing more than that. David has the same thoughts when someone who is a ‘hugger’ tries to hug him.

David Spade: Nothing Personal

Being in the 3rd year of a two-week-long lockdown, a person claiming I-am-a-hugger shouldn’t be a personality trait anymore and should be treated like the relative who’s an ass grabber – ain’t nobody going near that right! He further talked about the ridiculousness of the whole pandemic situation where the names of the vaccines sounded like some magic spell when said out loud.

Spade often plays a pervert, lecherous man with a high sex drive in his films and his standup also isn’t wary of such subjects. From having threesome experiences in college to desperately trying various innovative ways to take the perfect nudes in his later years, he bares it all in the special. How to take a good nude of his ‘buddy’ is a genuine dilemma for David Spade at this age.

Talking about his age, it’s funny how your name can signify your age. Like David Spade says in the trailer of the show if he wanted to sound like 27 years old he would name himself Connor or some other popular name of the present time. You hear someone named Roger and you automatically assume it would be some old guy but you hear, Aiden & an image of a 20 year old vaping comes to mind.

Final Thought: Stream it or Skip it?

He is honest, raw and above all, absolutely hilarious in his standup. He is like the cool uncle who is totally up to date with the world trends and hanging out with him is always an adventure.

Be it his personal anecdotes or mere observations from daily life, his grab on the peculiarity of the situations is on point. If you are unsure what to watch with your dinner tonight and looking for something light-hearted but don’t want to start a sitcom, then this standup is for you. David Spade will not disappoint you after a long stressful day. From his take on influencers riding private planes to beguiling clickbait articles, he has got it all covered.

  1. I can’t believe we were watching the same thing. I’ve seen Spade with his standup n Vegas. He was great. But this Netflix special was dreadfully dull. A few good quips, but overall a bore fest.
