Darby and the Dead Ending Explained

From what we know after watching the comedy flick, Darby Harper forms a typically irritating relationship with Capri’s spirit, after she gets electrocuted in the school bathroom. Capri decides to give Harper a hard time, as a twisted way of convincing Darby to complete her final wishes.

In the process, she also helps the ghost-whispering teenager to change her personality completely, and become the new popular girl in the school. However, as a side effect of fame, Darby gets close to Capri’s ex-boyfriend and invites more trouble from the infuriating spirit. She becomes a subject of Capri’s ridicule until Darby herself embraces the truth.

When Darby Harper goes on to deliver a self-describing monologue at the party, she induces a definite change of heart in Capri’s plan. The deceased and mean cheerleader finally understands Darby’s perspective, and make peace with the teenage colleague. She even gets to know that Darby isn’t interested in her ex-boyfriend, and has a love interest of her own.

Moreover, the entire events take place on the same beach, where the two formed a connecting bond, during the first half of the film. The two frenemies finally separate after a series of fun-filled adventures together.

The last couple of scenes provides us with a glimpse of Darby’s new life, where she is content in her own skin. The gifted teenager also realizes that she may not be the most popular element of the high school, but she is definitely a unique soul. Moreover, we also get to see Harper reuniting with her love interest at last, in one of the ending montages.

The film also concludes with a symbolic gesture, when Darby and her dad are watching old tapes of their family picnic. Where, Darby’s mother finally makes an appearance in front of her daughter, and leaves with the hope, that everything will be fine for the kind teenager.
