Planning to Watch Country Queen? Here’s All You Need to Know About the Kenyan Drama Series

Country Queen is upcoming drama series from Kenya, set to be released on Netflix this month. It is directed by Vincent Mbaya, Tosh Gitonga and Brian Munene. It tells the story of a small village whose existence is threatened by an invasive mining company, on the other side, a city girl caught between two worlds must return home, overcome her painful past to save the village and find herself in the process.

It is the first Kenyan series to be released on the OTT platform. It will have a mix of English & Swahili and explores themes like rural-urban conflict, inter-family relationships, betrayal, love and commitment.

The cast of the series includes Melissa Kiplagat, Melvin Alusa, Nini Wacera, Blessing Lung’aho, Sheila Munyiva, Raymond Ofula, Mumbi Kaigwa, Muthoni Gathecha, Eddy Kimani, Abu Sensei, Nice Githinji, Joel Otukho, Oliver Litondo and Brian Kisau.

Country Queen Plot/Synopsis

The official synopsis of the series reads – A Nairobi event planner returns to her village after 10 years, where she confronts her past — and a mining company that threatens to destroy her home. Set in contemporary Kenya, it is a family drama series that tells the story of ordinary Kenyans fighting against a corporate power that threatens to destroy their homes and lives.

The series focuses on the issues of land grabbing and exploitation, how these factors impact the lives and relationships of the main characters, their families and communities. A prevailing theme of the series is also the pursuit of ambition in the face of loyalty to tradition and cultural history.
