Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’ Trailer Promises Time-Twisting Madness

One of the most awaited movies of 2020 is probably Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. The director, who was last seen with his 2017 movie Dunkirk, has always exceeded expectations with his releases. Coupled with the fact that audiences have gone almost three months without any theatrical releases, it does create a hype around a movie like no other.

Honestly, Tenet’s new trailer promises to be everything that we expect it to be – the scene is set in a world of international espionage, with the trailer hinting at more action and time-bending mysteries. The new Tenet trailer was dropped in Fortnite.

Tenet follows a group of secret agents who are trying to prevent World War III. However, there’s a twist. These people have time-bending abilities of their own. Contrary to the previous trailer, this one features several new scenes and some really big set pieces spanning over several countries. These include a Boeing 747 crashing into a building and catching fire and an intense shootout taking place in a concert hall where, mysteriously, the packed audience seems to be asleep or knocked out. There were also mentions in the trailer of “people in the future who need us” and they’ll need to “reverse the flow of time” thrown in the air.

The stars in the film include John David Washington who seems to be the protagonist of Tenet, albeit unnamed till now. In addition to him, we also have Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine, Kenneth Branagh, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clemence Poesy, Himesh Patel, Denzil Smith, Martin Donovan and Sean Avery.

The concept of time inversion is introduced in this Tenet trailer, as opposed to time travel as people had earlier predicted. It was mentioned using ample words and visuals – “You’re not shooting the bullet. You’re catching it,” Poesy tells Washington’s character.

Other interesting things include the fact that Tenet, a palindrome – time can move both forward and backward in this new reality. Another thing that the trailer hinted at was that perhaps Tenet works as a password of some kind that can open doors and also, probably in extreme circumstances, gets you killed.

Describing Tenet, Robert Pattinson has said, “in each country, there’s, like, an enormous set-piece scene, which is like the climax of a normal movie. In every single country.” He has further confirmed that there is no time travelling in Tenet.

Nolan has been a big crusader of keeping his July 17 release date in the past and has time and again confirmed that he will stick to his release date for Tenet. However, how much that will be possible – with the pandemic and all – is yet to be seen. Maybe that’s why he came up with “Coming to theatres” at the end of the trailer but didn’t provide a release date. Now that’s a smart move.

Nolan’s Tenet is not just one of the biggest and most anticipated Warner Bros. releases of the year, it is also a big test for Hollywood studios who are wondering when to start releasing their films after facing severe delays due to the coronavirus pandemic.
