Chasing Waves: All About the Upcoming Japanese Surf Culture Docuseries

Chasing Waves is an upcoming docuseries that will be premiering on Disney+ Hotstar. Directed by Sophia Kruz and Jason Baffa, the series will highlight the Japanese surf culture and its significance. Sophia Kruz, Christopher G. Cowen and Andrew Fried are the series’ producers. Kyle Pahlow is the cinematographer, and William Ryan Fritch and The Gifted give the music.

The docu-series features extraordinary pro surfers Mahina Maeda, Yuma Takanuki, Sara Kohrogi, 2021 Olympic Silver Medallist Kanoa Igarashi and Australian-Japanese surfer Connor O’Leary.

Chasing Waves Synopsis

The official Disney+ Hotstar description of the docuseries is as follows:

The series follows multicultural athletes in pursuit of their dreams and showcases what it takes to suceed in international surfing industry

The premise of the documentary will be to shine the spotlight on the overlooked form of sport. People need to learn more about the activity, and the series’ main objective is to make the general public aware of it. For some, it is not just a form of hobby but a lifestyle and a dream that they have been working hard to achieve. It will give the audience an up-close look at the industry and what it takes to make it to the top.

After surfing debuted in Tokyo Olympics 2020, Japan has become a major hub for the sport. The series will highlight the country’s reach in the global surf culture and investigates deeper into the diverse regions. Japan’s long coastline ranging over 18000 miles, makes the country one of a kind.

In the trailer, the picturesque locations of the country are displayed. The creators utilised top-notch camera equipment to capture the most complex moves by the athletes in the sea. The audience will also get a closer look at the surfers’ different cultural backgrounds and their difficult journey to success.

A holistic picture of the surfing culture in Japan and the difficulty the people in the industry go through is mainly what the series will be about. The sport is also a form of escape and motivation for most who never gave up on life, no matter what they went through. Learning about the various stories about the athletes is bound to be a learning experience for the viewers.
