Cadaver Review: Amala Paul’s Predictable Thriller With an Unexpected End

Cadaver is a Tamil medical crime thriller which is released on Disney+ Hotstar on 12 August. It is directed by Anoop S Panicker and the screenplay is written by Abhilash Pillai. Produced by Amala Paul, who also stars in a lead role in the film. The other cast includes Riythvika, Harish Uthaman, Athulya Ravi, Adith Arun and Ramdoss in the supporting roles.

The film has a runtime of about 2 hours and is available in Telugu and Kannada languages as well. A specialised pathologist and a police officer try to solve a series of murders involving a prisoner. Their investigations lead to more shocking revelations.

The official synopsis of the film reads:

A high-profile murder baffles the cops when a prison inmate claims responsibility and promises more deaths. Will police surgeon Bhadra crack this mystery?

-Cadaver Review Does Not Contain Any Spoiler-

The film has a grim start with a man in handcuffs being led to a cemetery where a woman lies in the grave, ready to be buried. Probably someone close to the man, who then decides to take revenge on whoever made her like this. Soon a man in a car gets a call from a mysterious man who says, I am coming for you.

He turns out to be the chief heart surgeon of a reputed hospital in the city, who had been missing for some days and finally his body is found in a forest. But it’s totally burnt to ashes. Here the lead police officer has to take Dr Bhadra’s help, as she is the best in her field of getting answers from the dead bodies, and soon both of them try to investigate the case.

With no clue about the killer, they somehow get to know about a prisoner named Vetri, who had already vowed to kill the same surgeon and even drew his portrait on the walls of his cell, just before he went missing. Therefore, he becomes a prime suspect in the case, but if he is imprisoned, then how did the murder take place?

To answer this question, they further investigate Vetri and his past. Meanwhile, he confesses again that he will kill his second target and even leaves some clues about his identity. But even after figuring out the target in time, the person ends up dead. Concluding that there’s someone else who might be helping Vetri, on the other hand, he himself is not safe.

By the first half of the film ends, it is predictable and you can take a guess what’s going to happen. It might even feel slow or another crime film with bloodshed. But it quickly changes its route in the second half, when we get to know more about Vetri’s past and all the horrible things that happened to him.

The role of Dr Bhadra is definitely the leading force which takes us from one point to another but can feel a bit dramatic and dragging at times as well. If you think she is just a tool to help viewers navigate, then you are in for a nice surprise towards the end. For all, I can say, her character is more important than you think.

Summing Up: Cadaver

This crime thriller is an interesting film but not at all times. There are spurts of moments that make it worthwhile to sit through the long 2 hours. The writing has its loopholes which don’t make sense and could have been well put together. Like why did the revenge happen after 4-5 years, when the killer had determined it long ago?

And the reason for Vetri being in jail was revealed so late, that throughout the film it bugged me, what is his crime exactly? The cinematography of the film is definitely picturesque and adds to the aesthetic of the film. It is a decent thriller which can be watched casually for its twisted end reveal.

Cadaver is now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
