Boyfriend on Demand Review
In this light-hearted rom-com series, a burnt-out webtoon producer, who barely has enough time for herself after her work, tries out a subscription-based virtual dating platform and jumps right into it, hoping that it turns into a distraction from her high-stress job. However, the immersive digital world starts to slowly consume her with perfectly tailored romantic scenarios involving a variety of dream partners that slowly blur the lines between reality and fiction.
Netflix’s Boyfriend on Demand makes us painfully aware of the dangers of the modern virtual world, where everything, from dates to desserts, takes place online. Slowly taking us away from real-life experiences that nourish us, we are left isolated and lonely, never really sure about where we stand and always unsure of our next move. Something similar happens with our protagonist, Seo Mi-rae, who is somehow stuck in an odd time loop wherein we see her getting deeper into the craziness of her online romance with non-existent men, while finding herself getting further away from actual experiences that matter.

The series is charming at first, even humorous, leaving us engaged and looking forward to seeing Mi-rae’s transformation. However, after the first five episodes, the series starts to feel oddly repetitive and lacking substance, constantly pushing us to see Mi-rae dating the hottest men in some fantasy, but the story never goes further than that. We see her chemistry with Seo In-guk, but neither the relationship nor the characters flourish in any real way, showcasing the clear lack of depth in both.
Mi-rae’s journey seems to be cyclical, and we are forced to live in this loop with her for far too long. It definitely makes us lose ourselves sometimes as Mi-rae dates an array of very handsome men from some of our most favourite shows, but there’s a clear lack of depth in the storyline that becomes painfully obvious after a while. Plus, it doesn’t help that a successful professional like her can act extremely childish from time to time, and it left me extremely annoyed with her. It’s hard to root for her sometimes because of this, as she can get very immature, forgetting to draw the line when it’s needed.

Now, I do get that maybe that’s the point – even the most sceptical of us can lose ourselves when we find something that we truly want deep down. But even then, she’s extremely unprofessional and made me want to scream at her more often than not! Both Jisoo and Seo In-guk are great in the show, but again, their talents are underutilised to a criminal degree. Seo In-guk, especially, has hardly anything to do as Park Gyeong-nam, which is such a shame because he’s such a charming actor.
Final Thoughts

Boyfriend on Demand is sweet and lighthearted, but it tends to get very repetitive after a while, leaving us to constantly relive the same thing over and over again. Maybe that’s the point, but this could’ve been shorter for it to truly be impactful. Seo In-guk is possibly the best part about this series for me, and he leaves your heart fluttering, despite all the very handsome men that this show brings to us.

I don’t know if we have watched the same drama but how can you say it became repetitive after episode 5 when it started to flourish into a very meaningful and emotional storyline i don’y know if you have watched kdrama’s before but this drama did what others couldn’t for years now and it was connecting a beautiful storyline to a and meaningful ending.
Not sure about the repetitive part.. but it delivered what it should from the vr dating aspect because it made the ML realize that the men there are actually programmed on how they should reply, react etc made her try again to actually date in real life and redefine her concept of love because of her past relationship.. its not supposed to be like the other heavy hitting drama live plot drama.. its really meant to be a light hearted feel good drama.. i realized that the plot is actually unique on how they used the vr dating aspect as part of her overall realization..
I don’t get it the part u say repetitive, every dating virtual have different concept, but the end u have to winning the boys heart bcz main concept virtual console is about dating, but the concept about virtual dating is very fresh, this is not only a common RomCom, they also have deep meaningfull storyline..Please don’t rush if you watch the drama you are going to give a review. Thankyou

Had trouble finding a good rom com lately and this filled the spot 😁 the acting was great all around and storyline is very interesting (I would try a BOD device)
