Best Oscars 2023 Moments
The Daniels Best Direction Speech
Winning the Best Director award for their film Everything Everywhere All at Once, the duo each took turns to say their piece in front of the Academy members while also sharing some wonderful anecdotes from their childhood. Daniel Scheinert’s comment about dressing in drag and being no threat is perhaps one that was most iconic considering the political climate surrounding drag performances in front of children. On the other hand, Daniel Kwan, took this moment to remind everyone and his child that this is not a standard they need to live up to, because it’s a privilege to win.
Lady Gaga’s Wardrobe Change
The artist showed up on the red (champagne this time) carpet in a stunning black gown with a low-waisted skirt and a fitted corset silhouette, coupled with a bold red lip and dark eye makeup. Swinging completely in the opposite direction during her performance, the artist chose to wear a dark grey T-shirt and ripped jeans with minimal to no makeup.
It was iconic because the artist performed the stripped version of her soundtrack Hold My Hand, and completely wowed the Academy members. This performance proved to people that Gaga doesn’t need big set pieces to make her mark.
Jimmy Kimmel Asking Actors to Protect Him from Harm
After an eventful ceremony last year, Jimmy Kimmel decided that the best way he would be protected is by the people in the audience, the Academy members rushing to his aid. While this was already interesting and hilarious, Andrew Garfield’s reaction and look in the lens is perhaps the most interesting thing we have seen at the Academy Awards.
Ariana DeBose Tearing Up During Award Announcement
As last year’s winner, Ariana DeBose was called to present the award for Best Supporting Actor and Actress. Along with Troy Kostur, DeBose was announcing the winner when she started tearing up after seeing Ke Huy Quan’s name. She called out his name and when he came up on stage, she gave him a big hug. This is a big win for both the actor who has been reinvited to the industry and the community he represents. DeBose was in a similar position last year, becoming the first queer, Afro-Latina woman to win the award.

This became the second Oscar India has brought home this year after The Elephant Whisperers won the Best Short-form Documentary award. The song’s critical acclaim and mass adoration rendered this award a global win.
An Irish Goodbye with a Birthday
For the winners of this award, it wasn’t just the Award Ceremony, it was their star, James Martin’s birthday. When they won the award, every single member present inside was wishing him a Happy Birthday. It was one of the most wholesome moments of the awards ceremony, The Irish Goodbye won the Best Live Action Short Film and spent half the acceptance speech time in wishing their costar a happy birthday.
Michelle Yeoh and the Bagel Make History
Everything Everywhere All At Once swept the awards ceremony by taking home 7 out of the 11 awards they were nominated for. One of them was truly culturally defining because Michelle Yeoh became the first woman of colour to win Best Actress in over 20 years. She shared in her speech how women shouldn’t allow anyone to tell them that they are out of their prime. It was a sight to see.
Rihanna’s Performance Honouring Chadwick Boseman
With Danai Gurira introducing Rihanna and the song Lift Me Up, the stage filled with violin players and an orchestra playing melodious notes. Rihanna and the rest of the songwriters have expressed how this song was written for Chadwick Boseman and his legacy as an actor in the superhero universe and a champion of artists’ rights.
