While this highly anticipated star-studded film was released today, the Asteroid City reactions are already here, letting everyone know what they can expect from this film. Directed by the acclaimed Wes Anderson, this film stars Scarlett Johansson, Jason Schwartzman, Tom Hanks, Maya Hawke, Margot Robbie, Tony Revolori, Tilda Swinton, Steve Carrell, Hong Chau, Jeffrey Wright, Jeff Goldblum, Liev Schreiber, Willem Defoe, Adrien Brody, Edward Norton, Bryan Cranston, Bill Murray and Rupert Friend, alongside other cast members. If this long list doesn’t convince you, then perhaps the storyline will.
Following a fictional city somewhere in America, this film is about how they are so obsessed with space that all the kids, adults, and even the leader takes charge of understanding what lies behind the stratosphere. The cast is so impressive that one can definitely expect there to be some brilliant acting moments and emotion that takes the cake above all. Amidst all this chaos of space and the travel to the exoplanets, we have a family who is just trying to stick together, but the father has his car broken down in Asteroid City.
Meanwhile, other people from outside this city come here to understand the charm of this place and get behind whatever hype has been created. One day though, a group of aliens descend on this city, and there is no way they know how to handle this kind of situation. Things are about to go haywire at the Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention held on Asteroid Day. A remote explosion somewhere afar sets everyone on edge, but newcomers to the city blur the danger that it presents.
The reactions to this film have been quite contradictory. While some herald the use of visual language to tell a heart-touching story, others are annoyed that something like this might contain incredibly hollow characters with not much to offer. The superficiality of the writing leaves them stumped, but the classic Wes Anderson visual structure remains relatively undisturbed throughout. However, there are still some people waiting to grasp the film in the way it is expected to be grasped.
However, most average viewers are just happy to see Anderson once again deliver on the same weirdo promise he had taken years ago. And the visual obsession that everyone has also extended to the brilliant use of typography that viewers point out in this film. There are some viewers who are even aware of the polarising aspects of this film and take that in stride when it comes to looking at the visuals. It is interesting to see how the internet reacts to things happening in real-time, especially with films being able to change as time passes on.
