American Murder: Gabby Petito Review

The docuseries follows the infamous Gabby Petito murder case that shook the country and brought everyone’s attention to domestic violence. When 22-year-old Gabby Petito went missing from her travel with her fiance Brian Laundrie, it revealed the dark side of her life and relationship which was known by none. In efforts to create travel vlogs, the young girl captured numerous videos that documented her life with her fiance which becomes a huge part of this documentary. It is also through these that we see the reality of her life being revealed.

I have to start by saying how immersive this whole series has been to me as a viewer. From seeing a young girl being loved by two sets of parents to her finding love, we see bits of every part of her life right here. And the videos captured by her for her vlog only make this all the more real for a viewer. We witness a cheerful girl trying to do something with life as she messes up in front of the camera and tries her best to capture the best version of life. This in a way makes us resonate with her and see her as someone around us.

As the series progresses and things begin to get messed up for Gabby, we are also struck by the events and feel the emotions that are flowing around the screen. And once you are captured by these emotions, there is no going back. I cannot help but compliment the directors for the way they have brought everything together in this series. From her vlog videos, the body cam footage, the interviews, and everything else. Every bit of this series follows a timeline and this only makes the storytelling smooth and captivating.

Meanwhile, we can see where the focus of this series really lies- domestic violence. While the efforts made to target domestic violence through this case only hold a small part of the series towards the end, there is a groundwork being laid for it throughout the documentary. This not only brings our entire focus to this particular topic but also influences the viewers to do something about it.

On the other hand, we know that there is little to nothing left to be added to the case as a whole because this isn’t the first time a documentary on the case has been made. But that doesn’t mean that this isn’t worth the watch, especially for those who like similar documentaries.
