All-Time High Review

Nassim Lyes is the right amount of hilarious in Nouveaux riches, a French film that is pure chaos and insanity from the moment it starts. It’s a comedy about a conman man whose entire life is a lie, and he can’t stop dreaming about the big life. I mean, he’s justified to do the latter; we are all guilty of it sometimes. But Thiago, or Youssef, isn’t just someone who loves to dream of the big life; his habit of lying and deceiving everyone around him is shocking to witness.
There are both a lot and not enough to talk about this movie – it’s just a wild ride from start to finish. There are things constantly happening that are, again, both unbelievable and extremely entertaining at the same time. The movie, basically, is a love story between two very toxic and broke people. In real life, you’d hate both of these people. But in All-Time High, it somehow works.

Thiago is both charismatic as the protagonist and extremely interesting to follow as he is annoying, and Stéphanie is a similar extreme presence in his life. Wherever the two of them go, they leave behind a ton of destruction, but it’s just so fun to watch them harass people around them that I sometimes questioned my own sanity while I watched the film.
I must say that with its insanity and all, the film doesn’t let you get bored or detached at any point. I was glued to the screen watching this story unfold and caught myself laughing multiple times at the sheer audacity of these insane people! The movie, however, won’t be for everyone. It’s loud, crass and sometimes very insulting, but if you have a stomach for loud humour and crass jokes, this one has a lot going for it.

The best part about the film, however, is the fact that the action sequences are amazing to watch. It’s realistic, flows extremely well and sometimes goes a little over the top, which works in favour of the film’s overall vibe. There are a ton of action sequences throughout the movie, and you won’t find yourself bored at any point while watching them. They don’t even feel like too much, and Nassim Lyes and Zoé Marchal are fantastic in all these moments.
Every character in the film is just extremely funny and unlikeable. But even among them, Nassim Lyes is fantastic as the selfish, perpetually broke and bald conman Youssef (or whatever his name is). He’s as annoying as he is entertaining, and I found myself hating him even though I couldn’t look away from him. Zoé Marchal is equally fun in the film, and her deceptions will also catch you by surprise. They share some very fun chemistry and match their characters’ crazies very well, making for a sweet love story (oddly).
Final Thoughts

This comedy film isn’t for everyone, and that’s fine. Its loud and crass humour caught me laughing multiple times throughout the runtime. The love story and comedy of these con artists blend well with the kickass action sequences and will serve you an entertaining 101 minutes. I guess my only gripe is that it definitely could’ve cut down on some of the scenes to get a tighter narrative, but honestly, these characters are good enough to watch for 100 minutes.
All-Time High is streaming on Netflix.
