All Quiet on the Western Front Review: Years of War for Moments of Peace

All Quiet on the Western Front is here to take us to the World War 1 time period and bring us closer to the terrifying experience the war brought upon many. The movie has shown us the grim reality of the war which became one of mankind’s biggest disasters and became a lesson that was ignored.

Directed by Edward Berger, the film stars Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Aaron Hilmer, Moritz Klaus, Edin Hasanovic, Daniel Brühl, and Devid Striesow, alongside other cast members. All Quiet on the Western Front follows the journey of a young teenager who soon realises that the ideals about the war that he has been taught are nothing but false.

Netflix’s synopsis of the movie reads:

When 17-year-old Paul joins the Western Front in World War l, his initial excitement is soon shattered by the grim reality of life in the trenches.

In just the first few minutes, All Quiet on the Western Front will tell you that watching this film will not be a bad choice. Clearly showing us the cold-blooded nature of war, this movie follows the journey of a simple uniform that chills your blood to the freezing point and clearly shows you the truth about such a war.

All Quiet on the Western Front Review
All Quiet on the Western Front still

While this is the third time the novel of the same name is being adapted into a film, I have to say that it has still managed to put out its individuality while bringing out something more for fans and watchers. Every single scene of this film has done a wonderful job of executing the meaning that it wants to convey and has covered the screen with grey even in beautiful backdrops.

The growth of our protagonist Paul is very evident as his expression of fear and irreparable mental damage can clearly be felt. This is also because we get a cinematic experience that takes us on a journey with him and we are able to feel the reason why he has become the way he is throughout the film.

On the other hand, the trauma that he has received which only gets another blow because of the attitude of his superior brings us an unforgettable climax that only has us wanting more. This brings me to the length of the film which is a whooping 2+ hours, and let’s face it, we aren’t really used to such long movies anymore.

However, the director has created a masterpiece that will grip your attention so well that you won’t even realise where the time went.
