Agent Kim Reactivated Episode 8 Review: Strength of Family Overcomes Hurdles

Just when we thought episode 7 was one of the best episodes, we have all the twists to raise the stakes in the eighth episode. Given that Kim is now with the North Korean agents and his daughter in the hands of the government, we, as viewers, were having so many predictions. However, the director of the series gave one of the smartest twists, so read on!

Smart Twist

Kim is at the North Korean detention facility; however, that’s not the truth. He isn’t really with the enemies, but it is revealed that the whole setup was made by the government to test Kim’s loyalty. How far does he go in not letting go of his own country? This scene proves there are so many tricks and twists to learn throughout the series.

Speaking of loyalty, Kim’s unwavering loyalty isn’t motivated by governments or politics but by the people he chooses to protect. This changes how he is perceived and shows why he is so angry whenever someone he loves is in danger.

Comedy That Never Feels Out of Place

Honestly, the reason why anyone could watch this action drama is because of the effortless comedy. I was laughing at the scene where Han-su’s attempt to dodge tranquilliser darts is an obvious allusion to The Matrix. The way he was exaggerating the movements and going about it is a visual gag. We also have Jin-cheol for another set of comedy, and he becomes the MVP again. The way they had to use so many tranquillisers on Jin-cheol to bring him down, not bodyshamed him but made him look like a larger-than-life man.

These moments of humour don’t undercut the tension. Instead, they give the audience brief moments to breathe before the story dives back into tension.

Quiet Performances Speak the Loudest

We have to look at some of the understated performances. Yes, let’s talk about Joo Sang-wook, who portrays Chief Nam’s humiliating defeat, which feels so emotional. Rather than dramatically changing the character’s bold traits, he subtly conveys how even a strong man’s confidence can be shaken. When he is defeated by Kim, we can see how he realises his cruel authority and how Kim is one of the strong people who will eventually bring him down.

So Ji-sub is equally impressive. His facial expressions are on point as they convey concern, anger, confusion and so on. His reaction upon recognising the identity of the unexpected North Korean asylum seeker says more than pages of dialogue ever could. It’s a reminder of why he remains the emotional anchor of the series.

Family Remains the Heart of the Story

Family is the core part of this story, and it is not just Kim and Min-ji’s storyline. Indeed, Min-ji and Kim’s father-daughter duo is the centrepiece, but we still see other families and the bond they have. Jin-cheol returns home expecting some appreciation after everything he has endured. However, his daughter doesn’t understand much about him, and his wife is only focused on him getting a shower. Though this might seem like a comedic aspect, it also shows how Jin-cheol lacks the appreciation from his family. His sacrifices are pointed out.

The episode also introduces Han-su’s son, Tae-hun, whose fearless personality immediately proves he is just like his father. Their playful taekwondo sparring session, complete with Tae-hun cheekily kicking his father from behind, shows that even the strongest man has a good vibe with his son.

Together, these family dynamics reinforce one of the drama’s central themes: every father expresses love differently, but each relationship carries its own emotional weight.

Betrayals, Betrayals and Betrayals

As expected, Kim has so many enemies who are waiting to lock him up. The episode continues to highlight the corruption within South Korea’s leadership. We see how the leaders collaborate with criminals for their own needs, and Kim and his fellow agents are blindly dying for their country. North Korean representatives also seamlessly meeting with South Korean representatives might seem too much of an exaggeration, but these scenes were placed to show how true leaders are fighting, whilst some are feeding on their energy.

While these plot conveniences may frustrate viewers looking for greater realism, they do little to diminish the episode’s overall entertainment value.

A Chilling Cliffhanger

The final moments belong entirely to Mole Cricket. Won Hyun-joon once again delivers a captivating performance. He is a menace with complete confidence. His calm delivery of the line, “You failed… your mission,” lands with chilling precision and instantly transforms the atmosphere heading into the next episode.

Final Verdict

Episode 8 has some ups and downs, but it showed the family theme prominently. Beneath the thrilling set pieces lies a story about loyalty, friendship, and the families that give each character something worth fighting for. Clever twists, strong performances, well-timed comedy, and another cliffhanger make this episode a great one!
