A Normal Woman Review
In A Normal Woman, we see a woman suddenly get a horrifying rash after her in-laws try to force her daughter to get plastic surgery, which results in her life getting tossed and turned in more ways than one. With the truth of her past and present haunting her like no other, it leaves her to question her choices and the choices that others make for her.
The film is a riveting and relatable watch that will leave a lot of viewers shocked. At first, you think there’s something supernatural happening, but soon enough, the story unravels in a way that will leave you heartbroken for Milla. It’s relatable in a way that will sneak up on you as Milla realises the sheer lies that she has been fed, along with the years of emotional abuse that she has consciously or unconsciously put up with.

In the midst of all this is Milla’s daughter Angel, whose grit and determination turn out to be Milla’s greatest strengths. When no one believes her, it’s Angel who comes out to support her, and it leaves us to think about our own allies when society tries to beat us down. Another character is Erika, who is the quintessential opportunist who sees nothing beyond their own selfish needs. With her own life difficult, she sees an opportunity in Milla’s heartbreaking situation and tries to play it in her favour. However, the way you get them is usually the way you lose them as well.
The film also feels like it highlights how women can be the source of each other’s greatest strengths as well as their biggest enemies. While Angel sees through the situation flawlessly and does the right thing, Erika and Liliana are only interested in taking advantage of another woman’s difficult times in hopes of getting something out of it. It’s shown well in the film and leaves an impact, along with the psychological abuse that Milla is going through.

Marissa Anita is fantastic as Milla and leaves an impression on you. You feel her feelings as she struggles to come to terms with what is going on in her life. Widyawati, as Liliana, is a fantastic antagonist and makes you hate her thoroughly. Lastly, Gisella Anastasia as Erika has very little time in the film, but leaves an impact regardless, while Mima Shafa, as Angel, makes you root for her strength and relentlessness.
Final Thoughts

A Normal Woman leaves an impact on you for most of its runtime, leaving you to stay on edge throughout. Although some of the twists might seem a bit generic, it’s Milla’s journey that is the real impactful watch here and will leave you rooting throughout. It highlights the huge pressure we put on women from their youth on physical appearance, and the film does so impactfully. All in all, this one’s a good watch.
