Highlights of the Episode

Episode 9 is more about Ye-jin and Matthew reconciling after their clash. Thankfully, the episode doesn’t focus too much on their fight, but rather proceeds to concentrate on their emotional growth. We also see how they both walk past each other at the hotel without talking to each other. They could’ve sorted it out between themselves, but decided to hold onto their egos.

The turning point happens when Ye-jin overhears Matthew expressing his true feelings about her as she calls her old mother’s phone number. The scene also plays off well when Ye-jin understands how deeply Matthew loves her and her only. This becomes the checkpoint for her to recover from the damage they both have in their relationship.

We also see Matthew’s jealousy here and there when he sees Ye-jin and Eric close to each other. They’re super cheesy, and they make Matthew unintentionally super jealous.

Performance of the Cast

The cast continues to do a fantastic job. Their chemistry is really great, and we can see their strong performances. Ahn Hyo-seop’s comedy and vulnerability had a great balance throughout this episode. His jealousy scenes were at their peak, and the imagination sequences are extremely funny.

Likewise, Chae Won-bin’s part is equally wonderful. She really conveyed Ye-jin’s emotional part and also how she becomes lovey-dovey when she learns about Matthew’s love for her. She comforts Matthew without expecting his care in return, and it shows how fragile she is around her.

We gotta also gotta appreciate Kim Bum’s role as Eric. Eric has been a core character in this series. He is not just a supporting actor, but also plays a role in the benefit of Ye-jin’s career and personal life.

Themes Explored

We see emotional honesty in this episode. Hearing Matthew’s feelings for her shows her that she misunderstood him too much. The best part is, this time the male lead isn’t taking care of the female lead like always. Rather, Ye-jin takes the first step to sort things out with Matthew, and she also helps him get over his guilt. She turns the relationship into a healthier one by showing support.

Another cute theme is jealousy. It isn’t some sort of violent, jealous theme, but rather a cute one where we see Matthew panicking here and there, wondering what’s going on between Eric and Ye-jin. Though he knows nothing is serious between them as he and Ye-jin have already kissed and shared a bond, he just gets over his imagination, and it is funny to watch.

Direction and Editing

The fantasy sequences were hilarious and well-directed. The way we can see Matthew’s imagination becoming crazy whenever he sees Ye-jin with Eric proves how much the director has thought about it and how well the editors have worked.

Quieter scenes, especially the phone conversation payoff and the park interaction, are also conveyed simply yet effectively. The emotional moments rely more on expressions and silence, showing the creative direction in this part.

Flaws of the Episode

Nothing was too much of a flaw to be noticed, but just one aspect felt frustrating. The characters could’ve easily spoken to each other and sorted, but rather, the unnecessary ego clashes made the episode drag on much longer. Regardless, it did work for the Kdrama trope, but in the normal context, it’s a noble idiocy.

Final Thoughts

Overall, episode 9 really made the series get an emotional breather after the drama fell into a heavy aspect. The last episode left the viewers with a sad heart, but this one eased it.

The emotional payoff involving Ye-jin hearing Matthew’s true feelings works beautifully, while the fantasy jealousy scenes add charm and comedy without feeling excessive.
