That Night Ending Explained
The series opens with Elena calling her older sisters, Paula and Cris, to come to her immediately after she accidentally hit and killed a man with her car on a deserted road in the Dominican Republic. The series is told from multiple perspectives, wherein we piece together what happened that night.
Who was Wilfredo Gomez?
At first, Elena tells her sisters that Wilfredo was a random man who jumped in front of her car and was thus run over. However, while getting rid of his wallet, Paula realises that he was actually Ane’s father, and so Elena knew him. This obviously complicates the case and leaves Paul and Cris fuming because it makes Elena look even more guilty.

Why did Elena kill him and how?
Wilfredo was blackmailing Elena by threatening to go for Ane’s custody, which Elena refused to give him. She, at first, tried to arrange for the money, but when that didn’t pan out, she ended up coming up with a plan to kill him. She tried to drug him and run him over, but failed at both and eventually ran him over repeatedly with her car after telling him to check her engine.
Why didn’t Elena meet Ane after being sent to prison?

Although Elena had been telling herself and everyone that she had been doing everything to protect Ane, she eventually realised that Ane seeing her in prison would only make the baby worse off. She would rather have Cris look after Ane since she was the only one who told the truth to the police, and was thus let go. After Paul and Elena try to run away on their father’s instructions, things got worse for them, and Elena finally realised that what she had been doing had been extremely damaging to her daughter.
What past incident left the sisters traumatised?
Throughout the show, the sisters think back to a traumatic situation from the past that shaped all of their lives. We piece together the events throughout the runtime, and realise that when they were very young, their mother committed suicide with Elena and their brother. Paula tried to stop her, but being a child herself, wasn’t able to. She and Cris watched it happen and have been living with the guilt of not being able to stop the tragedy.

What happens in the end?
In episode 6, Ane and Cris go to the Dominican Republic on Paula’s insistence to testify on behalf of Elena. Ane, who is now grown up, has been trying to piece together what happened to Elena, but to no avail. In the end, though, she does testify for Elena, telling the judge the truth about her feelings and hoping that, if deemed right, Elena should be given the chance to be a contributing member of society.
Thankfully, Elena is given parole, but Ane leaves before meeting her, hoping to process her emotions before making decisions.
