Amy Bradley is Missing Review: A Shocking Series Dripping With Emotions

Amy Bradley is Missing Review: In this Netflix true crime documentary series, we explore the bizarre disappearance of 23-year-old Amy Bradley on March 23, 1998. After docking at Curaçao, the cruise ship she was on opened its doors to 2400 passengers to explore the island, but afterwards, law enforcement is called in when she is still nowhere to be found hours later. In a decade-long cold case, we explore what happened to Bradley.

You know, the thought of being stuck on a ship in the middle of the ocean is nauseating enough for me, but Netflix’s Amy Bradley is Missing just adds to that paranoia. The saddest part of all this is that this is an unsolved case, and the sheer lack of resolution will push you to feel absolutely heartbroken.

The documentary, as in the title, follows the disappearance of Amy Bradley on March 23, 1998, from the Royal Caribbean International cruise ship Rhapsody of the Seas. It follows the chain of events until Bradley’s family could no longer find her, and then we see the panic among not only the family but also the authorities as they try to locate the young woman. Among speculations of sex slavery, the documentary paints a vivid picture, full of conspiracy theories that lead nowhere and a family in perpetual mourning with the hope that things will work out.

The hard-hitting part of this docuseries is watching Amy’s friends and family expressing their feelings and recounting memories with her. It’s heartbreaking to watch them express how much they love Amy and knowing that there is no answer. The documentary does a great job of showing these emotions, and it’s one of the biggest parts here. The unfortunate reality of the situation is that there is simply no evidence to go by, so we don’t get a shocking fact that leaves us spellbound. However, it’s the emotions that play with our hearts and minds, and the docuseries does a great job of just letting them play out.

What this case has a lot of, though, is the sheer number of conspiracies. The documentary doesn’t capture the true terror of the situation or its implications, but it does bring these conspiracies in front of us. It might help spark online debate and hopefully bring something to light, hopefully giving something to the hopeful parents who are still waiting for answers 27 years later. The raw interviews do their job of catching you by surprise and might even leave you overwhelmed at times.

Amy Bradley is Missing is a triggering watch, although I will say that it’s more emotionally charged than thrilling. The horror, however, lies in the fact that a woman goes missing in the middle of the ocean, and no one has any idea of where she went. As if cruise ships weren’t already horrible enough!
