Honeymoon Crasher Review: Stupid, Silly, Wholesome

In this Netflix rom-com, a mother-son duo decide to go on the latter’s honeymoon after he is stood up at the altar. Heartbroken and trying to overcome the obstacles in his life, Lucas comes out of this horrible experience learning more about himself and recreating some lost family bonds.

Honeymoon Crasher Review

The name Honeymoon Crasher might make viewers wary of the typical mother-in-law from hell who crashers her son’s honeymoon. Interestingly, however, this Netflix French film takes a more wholesome and surprisingly funny route, which, although thoroughly cliched, entertained me thoroughly.

The film shows Lucas’s woes that eventually lead him to go on his honeymoon trip with his mother Lily so as not to waste the money and learn more about himself and his mother. It’s interesting how the movie takes this route, seeing as mothers are usually showcased to be this horrifying hurdle that couples have to overcome to achieve a great life. Lucas is a worrier who is termed “boring” by almost everyone around him. I agree with that assessment as well, but some people are late bloomers and there’s not much that can be done about that!

The film features silly humour and extreme situations that are funny when you watch it but make little sense otherwise. There are a few gags using miscommunication, but I would say that the movie is quite emotional and surprisingly warm, so much so that it left a smile on my face post completion. I liked Lily’s character, who is all-smiles all the time but has sadness within her. It’s nuanced and she takes time to open up to her son. It’s relatable as well, as we are quite aware of women giving up their hopes and dreams to make others smile.

Her positivity and zeal for life are infectious and I would say really add a lot to the runtime. However, I can’t say the say about Lucas, who is an annoying wet blanket. Although I acknowledge that that was the point of the character, it does get on your nerves sometimes. Another thing is the storyline is thoroughly cliched, especially the more humorous parts, and it employs the same tactics over and over again. There are a few small plotlines that are unnecessary, but that’s a staple these days in rom-coms.

I loved Michèle Laroque and Julien Frison in the film. They have great chemistry and Laroque, especially, is so amazing as Lily. She brings out these different flavours in her character which is fantastic to watch. I mentioned that I found Lucas to be annoying and I guess I will give kudos to Frison for playing his role extremely well!

Honeymoon Crashers‘s core story is refreshing and it’s wholesome, making you want to keep watching till the end. It’s funny and a bit cliched, but I think it’s easy to forgive some of these transgressions, especially because Laroque’s Lily is infectiously adorable!
