Sweet Dreams Review: Cute, Whimsical, Forgettable

In Hotstar’s Sweet Dreams, two strangers bump into each other serendipitously in the most unlikely way possible – in their dreams! As the two try to navigate the stresses and complexities of their lives, they also try to find out the mystery of their unlikely meeting and what entails in their future with each other.

The film has a runtime of 108 minutes. The film is produced by Jio Studios and Mango People Media.

In Sweet Dreams, we go through the ups and downs of two people who are thoroughly unsatisfied and confused about the direction that their lives are taking. As a result, they share a unique bond that stumps both of them and their friends as they desperately try to find the other in order to find the missing piece in their lives. There’s a charm and whimsy in the film that entertained me and left me wondering what comes next in the lives of the two. Of course, through the course of this mystery, they also find themselves.

Sweet Dreams is fine – it won’t be the best thing that you watch this year, but it’s not the worst either. It sits in the middle of these two and gives us something to mull over and reflect on as the runtime progresses. Most of the film follows Dia and Kenny desperately trying to find one another and the longing that these two showcase on screen makes you want to root for them thoroughly.

However, I will say that there are moments when the film really gets on your nerves and leaves you feeling frustrated with the progression and decision-making of these characters. Sure, there are almost encounters and times when Dia and Kenny bump into each other but don’t, but there are moments when the two deliberately, for some reason or another, choose to not reach out to one another. It’s the most frustrating thing because they spend every moment before and after that decision chasing after a dream. I questioned their intentions many times throughout the runtime of the film.

I also wondered whether it’s that difficult to find someone in this age of social media. Most of the film hinges on the fact that these two people are complete strangers, which is fine. However, when they finally do get an inkling of who the other person can be, they somehow aren’t able to come across their profiles on social media! Let’s not forget that Kenny is supposedly a mini-celebrity who dabbles with recycled furniture – would it really be that difficult to not accidentally bump into his profile on Instagram? Maybe not, but it does lead to frustration sometimes.

That being said, I think Sweet Dreams has its heart in the right place. I liked the ending and its messaging as it’s messaging is quite empowering. Promoting independence and finding your own hopes and dreams is always a win in my book and the film manages to do just that. Mithila Palkar and Amol Parashar are a great couple to look at and deliver great chemistry although they don’t share a lot of screen time. I surprisingly found myself rooting for Parashar’s Kenny with Sauraseni Maitra’s character, which doesn’t happen always. However, I must say that Maitra’s character has hardly any story to her and is just added to push Kenny down the right path.

Final Thoughts

In the end, Sweet Dreams is fine. It’s entertaining and gives the right message but I found it forgettable after all is said and done. The leads are cute and visually great. It’s light entertainment that is great for a one-time watch.
