Spellbound Review
Netflix Animated film Spellbound opens with a heartfelt music number sung by Prince Ellian of Lumbria who has been given a handful of responsibility when her parents are turned into monsters by an ancient curse. Of course, she has to embark on a journey to find a cure for her parents before the secret comes out in the open. The storyline of this story is quite cut and dry and doesn’t bring many twists and turns throughout the runtime. It’s also much like other well-known Disney animated films that have been hugely popular in the past so there’s not much to be shocked about here.
However, the film has its heart in the right place and a warmth that is impossible to ignore. Ignoring the implication that the parents are the victims here instead of the underage child who has to take care of her unruly parents as well as a huge kingdom at an age where she should be playing with her friends and being carefree, the series does a great job of bringing to us the importance of taking care of the family during trying times.

Listen, Spellbound is mostly for kids and although I would like to say that adults can enjoy it too (I mean, they can sure), the film is very much child-centric. The humour and the flow of the story are very much childlike and innocent, which can be great for anyone who wants to enjoy a fun, stress-free time. The animation is absolutely beautiful and will steal your heart as soon as you start watching it. The little monsters are so cute that they will melt your heart and thus it makes for a sweet watch with friends and family.
As mentioned earlier, there are hardly any twists and turns and the story is quite straightforward. The messaging is clear and there’s a warmth in the story that is impossible to ignore. Although the characters are quite cliched, there’s a comfort in watching a tried-and-tested film that doesn’t make you too sad and this film is exactly that. There is a ton of music (because it’s a musical) and it’s mostly quite nice and keeps things light and moving.
Final Thoughts

Spellbound is quite par for the course when it comes to children’s animated films. It’s cute, and frothy and is a swell time for light entertainment lovers. Of course, there aren’t many twists and turns that will leave you to uncover hidden messages underneath the story but that’s okay – it’s nice to kick back and enjoy for once.
