Kumari Srimathi Review

On the journey of a compactly packed 7-part series, Kumari Srimathi is the titular story of growth for not just its eponymous protagonist, but also her family members (Gautami Tadimalla as her mother, Praneetha Patnaik as her sister and Talluri Rameshwari as her grandmother). In the absence of a father figure, Srimathi, a 30-year-old woman is often chided by her mother for not having gotten married yet as she believes that women can’t get by in a society like theirs without men’s support.

Srimathi, on the other hand, embarks on the relentless journey of winning back her ancestral home, and the hurdles put in her way require her to raise a huge amount of cash in a very small window of time. Throughout the series, we come across various arcs, be it the protagonist aspiring to open a profitable bar and restaurant, putting off the societal pressures of women having to marry in a certain age bracket or adhering to certain roles or even going against her paternal uncle.

Regardless of how many dramatic turns in the path make room for a dysfunctional comedy, the best bits of the series stand tall in the moments shared by the women-led cast exerting their all to keep their family upright.

Kumari Srimathi Review - Nithya Menen
Gautami Tadimalla, Praneetha Patnaik and Nithay Menen.

Gautami Tadimalla, Praneetha Patnaik, Talluri Rameshwari and Nithya Menen’s matriarchal setup first portrays the hardships met by them in a predominantly heteronormative patriarchal society, and then matures into a support system that affirms the strength of empowerment earned by them over the years. It almost feels like a personal victory when Srimathi’s family is able to pull itself out of the shackling mindset predetermined by society as they own up to their individual strengths.

But what adds more power to this narrative is that it never comes across as a preachy monologue, rather the storytelling approach so employed relies on incorporating those values naturally by mingling them with the simple strengths of drama and comedy. At the centre of all confusions and tensions, the series maintains its familial disposition and emerges as a surprising bright winner shining with hope in the midst of dark thriller content now flooding OTT platforms and causing a major case of viewer fatigue.

Srimathi’s never-ending family drama again proves that light dramas like this can easily attract the viewers on any given day even when thrillers don’t hold the power to appeal to audiences. When you first jump into the series you may not even expect for it to be something profound, but then its mere simplicity takes control of the narrative and guides the journey ahead. The following drama and familial betrayals that unfold are nothing unheard of, yet their relatable familiarity never drags the plot down as an overused trope. Moreover, executing it in the heartiest way, the star ensemble charms you with its presence and reminds you of the goodness of lighthearted chaotic comedy.

Romantic subplots act as interventions, but they’re not too unwelcome because they’re neither dragged out nor is their elasticity tested by unnecessarily incorporating them. On the contrary, they rather end up humanising Srimathi’s character by not taking over the larger plot, but staying back as a mere part of her life without consuming all of it.

Kumari Srimathi OTT Series: Final Thoughts

The series starts off on an extremely light note, but then eventually pulls a few chuckles out of you, which ultimately also shape into an emotional ride centred around a women-led household that is initially dragged down by many stereotypes. But, in the end, it is exactly what wins over your heart in the end.

Nithya Menen and Nirupam Paritala

In a society where property and wills are official matters dominantly handled by men, Srimathi’s (Nithya Menen) striving struggle to fight for her family house while striking a balance of emotions with her mother, sister and grandmother in the absence of a father figure is a soaring flight that keeps the lighthearted hope of simplicity alive, and the intriguing betrayals kicking till the last minute. It’s a family entertainer through and through as its humble colours and tone bridge the gap between the life of the ostensible “modern” independent woman and Indian traditions.
