Ganta Insomniacs After School Episode 9

This was a funny episode, which came in like a breath of fresh air after the events of the previous one. It isn’t like the last episode left us on too sour of a note, and things were still hopeful as the episode came to an end. However, the end of a multi-episode long arc came as the rain washed out the hopes and dreams of many young teenagers. That is never going to be an easy thing to move past, but that’s exactly what our protagonists did in this episode.

Well, I assy protagonists, but it was mostly just Ganta. Magari tried to help, of course, but if you’re this deep into this show, you probably already know how he took it. He put the burden of everything on his shoulders and scrambled together a way to save everything- the photography trip. There was just one issue with that- the trip would cost a lot of money, and he was flat broke. Capitalism comes for us all, no matter our age or mental affliction.

Ukegawa Magari Insomniacs After School Episode 9

The lengths that he was willing to go to just to get this one thing was depicted very well and made for a nice little sidequest before the eventual end of the season. This entire episode felt like that, a sidequest which introduced a new character and allowed our characters to do their thing while they prepared to head off on their trip. Magari made full use of this, as the beginning of summer also meant bikini and beach season, which she and her friends put to good use in this episode.

It wasn’t all fun and games here, as we also got to learn some more about Ganta’s family history for the first time, and it was exactly how you would expect it. I am surprised that his dad wasn’t villainised as much as I expected him to be, given that Ganta is a rebellious teenager who doesn’t seem to have a good relationship with him. However, why Ganta wouldn’t tell him about his money woes was made very clear, and it was a fantastic explanation that did justice to both Ganta’s and his father’s characterisation.

“Family” seemed to be a running theme here, as we also saw a glimpse of Magari’s sister, who seems to be a normal, well-adjusted person just making her way through life while being as chill as possible. Expect to see a lot more of her in the rest of this season, given her plans, but she feels like a good addition to the cast and gives off some great elderly-sibling energy. On the other end of the elder sister spectrum, we had a bunch of Yui time in this one, which is always great.

Verdict

Insomniacs After School Episode 9 was a ridiculously fun time, given the subject matter it tended towards. Summer has just begun, and you can’t get better vibes from the weather than this show.
