The Tinder Swindler tells the jaw-dropping story of a prolific conman who posed as a billionaire playboy on Tinder and the women who set out to bring him down. Posing as a wealthy, jet-setting diamond mogul, he wooed women online and then conned them out of millions of dollars. Now some victims plan for payback in this Netflix documentary film.

February 2021

Nomadland

In a year when most of the world was restricted among four walls, this film came as a breath of fresh air and won us over. The story shows that following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, Fern (Frances McDormand) packs her van and sets off on the road to explore a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad.

Apart from Best Picture, Chloé Zhao became the second woman and the first Asian American woman to win for directing, while Frances McDormand won her third best actress trophy.

All the Bright Places

Adapted from the novel of the same name by Jennifer Niven. It stars Elle Fanning, Justice Smith, Alexandra Shipp, Kelli O’Hara, Lamar Johnson, Virginia Gardner, Felix Mallard, Sofia Hasmik, Keegan-Michael Key, and Luke Wilson. The story is about two teens facing personal struggles and forming a powerful bond as they embark on a cathartic journey chronicling the wonders of Indiana.

Alita: Battle Angel

Based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga series Gunnm, the film is written and produced by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez. It follows Alita (Rosa Salazar) who awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize, she is taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past.

As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious history while her street-smart new friend Hugo (Keean Johnson) offers instead to help trigger her memories. But it is only when the deadly and corrupt forces that run the city come after Alita that she discovers a clue to her past – she has unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she’s grown to love.

February 2017

Get Out

February 2017 was a month full of various horror movies released from Rings to Don’t Knock Twice and many more. Out of these, Get Out stands out the most, as it brings out a new perspective on horror. It shows that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy (Catherine Keener) and Dean (Bradley Whitford).

At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behaviour as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined.

Who doesn’t know about Marvel’s most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool? The Lego Movie

The story follows Emmet an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO mini-figure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person (the MasterBuilder) and the key to saving his LEGO world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers – including an old mystic (voiced by Morgan Freeman) and LEGO Batman (voiced by Will Arnett), on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant from glueing the universe together. A journey for which Emmett is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

Kai Po Che!

Adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s 2008 novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life, the film stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Rajkummar Rao and Amit Sadh in the titular role. It is a friendship-based sports drama where, fueled by different ambitions, three best friends in Ahmedabad start a cricket academy, but their bond and dreams are tested by tragedy and turmoil.
