The Redeem Team 2022: Netflix Announces a Dream Documentary For Basketball Lovers In a Unique Collaboration

On August 19, 2022, Netflix announced it would release a documentary about US Olympic Basketball. The Redeem Team will follow the rise of the 2008 Men’s National Team.

Jon Weinbach, a producer, director, and screenwriter who also serves as the head of Skydance Sports, a branch of Skydance Media, is the movie’s director. He was formerly the executive producer and EVP of Mandalay Sports Media.

The Redeem Team sports documentary is produced by Greg Groggel & Diego Hurtado De Mendoza. This collaboration also includes executive Producer Frank Marshall, Mike Tollin, Jon Weinbach, Dwyane Wade, Mark Parkman, Mary Byrne, and Yiannis Exarchos with LeBron James, Maverick Carter, Jamal Henderson, and Philip Byron of UNINTERRUPTED

For this documentary, the IOC declassified previously unreleased materials from their vaults, including videos of basketball from the past 70 Olympic Games history. The Olympic Channel, the IOC-owned and -operated media studio, and Netflix are working together for the first time on a film that will be exclusively available on a global streaming service.

In collaboration with 59th and Prairie Entertainment, UNINTERRUPTED, NBA Entertainment, and USA Basketball, Olympic Channel, Kennedy/Marshall Company, and Mandalay Sports Media produced The Redeem Team.

James and Netflix previously collaborated on the Adam Sandler film Hustle. Most directors struggle to capture the game’s rhythm, which leads to jerky editing that detracts from the basketball experience. The one-on-one closeups used in the movie during the games made the action feel more stressful and personal, which increased the stakes for the viewer. The broader basketball shots were just as good.

Pretty much everyone who watched it enjoyed the basketball project. When The Redeem Team documentary debuts on the service, the distributor certainly expects a similar experience.

Why should you watch The Redeem Team’s story? The same thing, in Weinbach’s opinion, also creates an excellent sports documentary: It is a human narrative with a sporting element. It is both a story about a team and a personalized one. They sought to establish a point with one another, the world, and themselves.
