Classroom Of The Elite Season 2 Episode 4 Review- Not Satisfactory

I was browsing MAL’s most popular list one day (if you don’t know why, read this review), and I saw something most peculiar in the manga section. Ranked 16th on the highest-rated manga of all time was Classroom Of The Elite, with an extraordinarily high score of 8.92. We all know that MAL isn’t the most accurate description of how good an anime or manga is, but it gives you a good idea of what the general public thinks about something. Apparently, they think very highly of the manga that this show adapts. It came as a surprise because you would never know this from the quality of the anime.

The manga might already be a classic and highly revered, but the anime is a totally different story. It appears that the story of this show is very hard to adapt to this medium from its original one. It’s either that or the team behind it is highly incompetent, so I will assume the first statement is the correct one for its sake. If it weren’t true, this is perhaps the worst direction for any show of this popularity I’ve ever seen. The high regard that people hold the manga tells us that the problem here isn’t with the story but with the execution.

We have already been through one extraordinarily contrived game this season and are only in episode 4 of the show. It was a game based on a conversation between 8 different teams of 10, and we maybe got to hear two minutes of actual talking in three episodes. After that, we got served with the most underwhelming finale that the show has seen, but we were at least left with the hope that the game would offer an explanation of some kind that would increase our understanding of the game, or at the very least what happened at the end. It did not.

There was a thirty-second explanation at the start, which offered very little in the name of satisfaction and left more questions than answers. Then, the show immediately moved on to the next game in the never-ending struggle. There was no space to breathe or consider the fallout of what had happened, as we were now supposed to enjoy a sports festival. Thankfully, the festival is much simpler than the previous game, but the show somehow found a way to make even that boring.

It wasn’t all bad, as Ayanokoji seemed to learn a valuable lesson about numbers and to win as a group, but the current trend sees him trying to teach Suzune the same lesson that she learned at the end of last season. The sports festival arc is not without potential, but the current pacing of the show threatens to ruin everything with its long-winded conversations that don’t go anywhere, followed by frighteningly quick progress that doesn’t lend well to character development. Things aren’t looking good for the show. Let’s just hope it gets back on track soon.
Verdict
Classroom Of The Elite Season 2 Episode 4 was a lacklustre episode that wanted to start a new arc with a bang but instead ended up with a very boring setup to an uninspiring arc. Can we start reading the manga instead?

I’d be likely to agree with this review if the episode only featured scenes based on the new test, you’ve forgotten to give credit to the other scenes within this episode (Ayanokoji working his manipulation tactics within class D and Kei, as well as the revelation of Kushida at the end). Most of this review is based on issues with previous episodes and tests, and not this episode in itself. It’s 25 minutes and they fit in as much as they can within that time frame, I’m unsure what excitement you were expecting during an episode which sets up the next test? Obviously it will be an information-dump episode, that’s okay.
Thanks for your comment. Let me ask you just this question- Has this entire season been anything other than an information dump so far? Because I believe it has been, and that we have a right to complain about how stupidly fast and unsatisfying everything is.
You’re so right ,it’s an information-dump episode
Indeed it is.
I guess that’s what this season would be all about……an information dump ????
And it’s fast, yeah, but not stupidly and it’s actually satisfying and not boring either
You should be able to move at it’s pace….lol
I am able to “move at its pace”. It’s just not particularly enjoyable doing so.
This is what happens when you try to cram an entire volume into only 3 episodes. Volume 5 (the one that this episode is adopting) is one of the most fun volumes of the series. There are a lot of things going on at the same time but the set-ups and pay-offs are absolutely brilliant.
I’ve pretty much given up hope on the anime and its lacklustre adaptation at this point. There’s no love behind it and they are just trying to milk an already well established and loved series..
That makes so much sense and wants me to get into the manga, thanks for the comment!
