Flashback Summer Time Render Episode 14

There was so much to unpack in just the last episode that the entirety of this review can be spent dissecting that episode with the benefit of being able to talk about spoilers. Instead of the whole review, let’s just take a little time and put what we know so far together. The island is tormented by shadows who plan on devouring the entirety of it to regain their prior strength. The problem is that the humans living on that island would rather not be devoured alive and replaced with similar-looking shadows.

There is the element of time travel and looping mixed in with it, which hasn’t even started to make sense so far. However, if the latest episode was any proof, there are no plot holes or conveniences in the plans for the future. This episode was entirely focused on rounding up the story of Hizuru, who has turned out to be an even more fascinating character than we previously imagined her to be. There are layers to the levels of loneliness and competence that were showcased very well here and added dimensions to her character.

Hizuru sad Summer Time Render Episode 14

Haine has also proven herself to be an unbeatable foe, though not necessarily an invulnerable one so far. In every episode, the characters seem to get further and further away from beating her or even getting away from her. The ending stinger from this episode was another demonstration of how out of depth these guys are. Nothing they do seems to work, and Haine’s newfound abilities have nullified the one advantage that they thought they had. Shinpei is slowly being choked out of time, and the situation couldn’t be any direr.

The connection between Ryuunosuke and Hizuru was much more complex than the original multi-personality disorder we considered it to be. Hizuru being linked to Haine also makes thematical sense and explains her personal involvement in this a little better. The death of a brother was already a decent excuse, but the murder of a brother at the hands of someone you thought you trusted is on another level altogether. Hizuru is out for blood, and she won’t rest until she gets it.

There was a little awkward dialogue in this episode that showcased Shinpei’s non-confrontational personality alongside his distaste for public speaking a little too well. That is also an interesting plot device that can be exploited better in the next episode. The animation and music, like always, were on top form here, and despite the animators using a few tricks to make their jobs easier, it didn’t stand out that much. This was another nail-biting and fantastic outing of a show that continues to gather more and more acclaim through its sheer quality.

Verdict

Summer Time Render Episode 14 was another heartwrenching and suspenseful episode that finished telling the story of one character while moving the show towards its finale.
