The Show: That’s My Time with David Letterman

David Letterman is one of the most popular TV personalities and comedians, who rose to fame in the ’80s with his late-night talk show Late Night with David Letterman on NBC. He later hosted another talk show on CBS called the Late Show with David Letterman. He has gained popularity over the years due to his unique screen persona and comic style. His Netflix show My Next Guest Needs no Introduction with David Letterman has been on the top list as well.

In this Netflix special, David enters the stage with a round of applause and a standing ovation, followed by a small opening act by him which usually involves talking about the current popular events and anecdotes from his life. He even interacts with the audience throughout, which is fun to watch and often hilarious. He then takes his seat on stage and the featuring guest comedian takes up the stage.

Episode 1 – Sam Morril

The first guest on That’s My Time with David Letterman is Sam Morril who enthrals the audience with his quick wit and jokes transitioning from one topic to another in a smooth manner. Having Sam as the first guest seems to be a great choice since he is one of the popular stand-up comics at the moment and I am sure almost everyone must have seen at least one youtube short from his shows.

After his set, he sits down with David Letterman for the talk segment. He talks about being in therapy, being on the road and touring various cities and how he had bombed 5 nights in a row. He explains how in the pandemic he just casually started having rooftop shows on any roof in New York which went on for weeks and was a bit of success too. Also, about his cameo in Joker and hilarious behind the scenes story about it.

Episode 2 – Naomi Ekperigin

In the second episode, David starts off the show with a small segment called ‘Things you never hear in LA’, where he reads off things that might never hear somebody say in LA and brings out a good laugh among the audience. This is followed by the introduction to Naomi Ekperigin, who is an American comedian, actress and writer. She has written for the television shows like NBC’s Great News and Broad City.

She talks about her life during the pandemic regarding eating habits, not showering for days and refers to her husband of 12 years as ‘Jew-Boo’ in her set. When she sat down for a chat, she caught David Letterman off-guard when she asked for permission to touch his beard and later described it as a cotton candy vibe.

Episode 3 – Rosebud Baker

In the third episode, David Letterman surprises the audience by asking how much they paid for the entry and even pays one of the audience members’ entry fee back which gets another round of applause from the audience. He even mentions the hostile behaviour towards stand-up comedians in contemporary times and asks the audience to meet him in the lobby if they wanna fight.

Followed by Rosebud Baker, a fast-rising comedian who became a writer for the HBO Max television series That Damn Michael Che in 2021 and is currently a writer for Saturday Night Live. As she sat down to talk, he expresses how it feels to be a writer on SNL, which is a really great opportunity yet quite nerve-wracking.

Final Thoughts: Stream It or Skip It?

That’s My Time with David Letterman on Netflix is a short but packed box of entertainment. It’s like a compact version of a late-night show episode featuring some good stand-up comedians. David Letterman’s presence is enough to carry the 18 minute long episodes but the featuring guests is an added bonus to it. Also, it seems like having a podcast is a prerequisite for any comedian.

Although, only 3 episodes are released as of now and the other 3 are scheduled to be released on 12 June. Looking at the cast you can expect Brian Simpson, Robin Tran and Phil Wang as the guest in the next episodes.

That’s My Time with David Letterman is streaming on Netflix.
