Netflix’s Felipe Esparza: Bad Decisions Review: An Unfunny and Fatuous Standup!

Felipe Esparza: Bad Decisions premiered on Netflix on 1st September 2020. For Esparza, this marks his third comedy special. Back in 2012, he released They’re Not Gonna Laugh at You for Showtime and Translate This for HBO in 2017.

Filmed in Santa Ana, California, as two separate performances — one in English and one in Spanish, this also marks the first time when Netflix has simultaneously released a bilingual set.

What Even!

I am not averse to comedy and standup, and little offensive jokes on various issues are acceptable sometimes. However, the problem here is that the Felipe Esparza standup is nothing more than insensitive, disgusting and unfunny.

Throughout this pandemic, I have come across various standups and this the first time Netflix has tried something new – bilingual. Unfortunately, this is a complete waste of time and filled with jokes that will make you say WTF!

Felipe Esparza: Bad Decisions

Out of everything that Esparza talks about, some of the topics are bullying, domestic violence, dogs, bad parenting, trans-folks, etc – pretty heavy stuff, right? However, instead of being aware and funny, Esparza tackles the topics in a very degrading way, in turn validating the vices that should never be validated.

Esparza carries himself on stage in a shaggy manner with unkempt hair, and pacing-around-the-stage may look funny but his material is just derogatory! At points, you will see him questioning his whole masculinity but even that doesn’t seem to be funny.

Stream It or Skip It

Felipe Esparza: Bad Decisions

SKIP IT! Felipe Esparza: Bad Decisions is one of those standups that will leave you disappointed. As a first time Esparza viewer, I would say that my experience was nothing more than offensive and downgrading.
Although your experience might vary, if you look into what his jokes represent, you might be equally disgusted as well.

Felipe Esparza: Bad Decisions is now streaming on Netflix.
