8 Best Miniseries of 2023 That Needs to Be On Your Watchlist

The Fall of the House of Usher

A book-to-screen adaptation has to be the first on this list, mostly because 2023 was disappointing in that area and The Fall of the House of Usher was nothing less than a reviving vial. The Edgar Allen Poe fans as well as the Mike Flannigan cult converge in this show that is dark, gloomy and filled with a kind of totality that will make you question everything around you.

The series tells the story of siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher who have built an empire of wealth, privilege and power for themselves. But once the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying, some unthinkable secrets come to life. The series stars Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, Mary McDonnell and several others. You can watch it on Netflix.

Beef

A comedy-drama series that will be the therapist for your relationship if you dare. This limited series is created by Lee Sung Jin and, stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong in the lead roles. With extraordinary performances and writing, there is something so nuanced about this show that it hits you in all the right spots.

The show revolves around two strangers who get into a road rage incident and that brings them closer. You can watch the series now on Netflix.

The Curse

If you like mixing comedy with thriller, this is the tea served right in 2023 for that reason. The Curse is funny, smart and everything you expect a Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie series to be. The show revolves around a couple who is cursed when they are trying to conceive a child while also starring in a show called Fliplanthropy. Sounds fun, right? Well with Emma Stone, Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie in the lea roles, it has to be!

The Railway Men

A historical drama miniseries that deserves to be on this list is The Railway Men which tells the story of Bhopal from the year 1984. It is about the gas tragedy and all you need to know is that it does justice to the story it put across on screen. The cast features R. Madhavan, Kay Kay Menon, Divyenndu, Babil Khan, Sunny Hinduja and Juhi Chawla Mehta. With four episodes only, watch this show on Netflix which will leave you with a deep impact.

Trial by Fire

Crime thriller fans must have had a year because this Hindi-language series is a gem that is hard to get over in the genre. With layered performances and intricate writing that will move you, Trial by Fire has been getting a lot of nods for all the right reasons. The show is based on the book Trial by Fire: The Tragic Tale of the Uphaar Fire Tragedy by Neelam Krishnamoorthy and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy and recounts the story of the authors’ lives. The cast includes Abhay Deol, Ashish Vidyarthi, Anupam Kher, Rajshri Deshpande, Rajesh Tailang, Ratna Pathak, Shilpa Shukla, Shardul Bharadwaj and several others. It is streaming on Netflix.

A Murder at the End of the World

After some beautiful releases last year, FX has not done its best this year in all honesty. We had shows like Class of 09 and Great Expectations but, they all had something or the other missing. But our judgement has disappeared after the drop of this FX on Hulu series starring Emma Corrin, Clive Owen, Harris Dickinson and others.

A show that is a delight for Agatha Christie fans or Knives Out geeks, this one revolves around eight strangers in a remote yet beautiful location where one dead body shakes everyone to show their true colours. Catch it right away on Disney+ Hotstar as well as Hulu.

Daisy Jones and the Six

When I came across this series, I was convinced that the Taylor Jenkins Reid book which this show is based on was meant for the TV, because how else can a book be better on-screen, right? A musical drama, a genre rare and scarce, especially in the miniseries category- Daisy Jones and the Six is all about love and loss in the world of music.

The main roles in the series are played by Riley Keough and Sam Claflin along with Camila Morrone, Suki Waterhouse, Will Harrison, Josh Whitehouse and Sebastian Chacon in supporting roles. The show is about a band of the titular name that rose from obscurity to fame until it dissolved into nothing. You can watch it on Amazon Prime Video.

Lessons in Chemistry

Feminism meets science like nothing we have ever seen. Lessons in Chemistry is about pride, empowerment and being a woman in an ever-evolving world. Set in the 60s, the show is developed by Lee Eisenberg and is based on the novel of the same name by Bonnie Garmus with Brie Larson in the lead role. It is about a female chemist using her learning and knowledge to start a cooking show to educate housewives on scientific topics while also helping them cook. You can watch it now on Apple TV+.
