You’re Nothing Special Review: The Newbie Witch Is an Awkward and Clumsy Teenager

Netflix is here with the story of a new witch who is clumsy and just another teenager who messes things up in the series You’re Nothing Special (original title: Tú no eres especial). Created by Estíbaliz Burgaleta, the show stars Oskar de la Fuente, Dèlia Brufau, María Mercado, alongside other cast members.

You’re Nothing Special is about the young Amaia who returns to her mother’s hometown only to become the new celebrity who is said to have inherited her grandmother’s powers. The young teenager then begins her journey to become the new witch in town who will cast a spell on anyone and everyone.

Netflix’s synopsis reads:

In this comedy series, a teen moves to her mom’s hometown, where her new classmates seem convinced she has magical powers that can solve their problems.

-You’re Nothing Special Review contains No Spoilers-

You’re Nothing Special starts off with the typical, let us show the ending and leave it at a cliffhanger to get viewers to stick to the end kind of scene. This teen series did the same thing as our protagonist Amaia is seen entering a party with confidence only to have someone splash their drink on her face.

Now I would be lying if I said that I didn’t find this cliche start interesting and the magic began, or so it seemed. I have to say that the protagonist gave me some Bella Swan vibes with the awkward girl who is new in town and does not like it one bit. However, the constant commentary on everything that she does makes it different.

You’re Nothing Special still

I have to say, the commentary does hit the spot because that’s exactly what is going on in the minds of the viewers who cannot help but sigh at the bad decisions she makes.

The embarrassing and awkward scenes do keep coming because that’s what teenage years are all about, so there’s no escape from that. And while we really want to throw some brains at Amaia, we know that we too have done such things in the past.

The plot is not too intense and the show is good for a light watch, but it isn’t something that will be labelled a must-watch. The scenes of her sorcery aren’t too intense either so if you’re here for magic with some Boom! and Bam! then you won’t be getting any.

However, that does not mean that there is no magic at all because it does exist but in a very subtle way that will make you think about it. Luckily, it’s alright even if you miss it because you’ll understand it towards the end along with Javi.

The development of Amaia is quite well as she slowly turns to like the town because of the friends that she has made, but there is a tough choice that lies in front of her which we don’t really get an answer for.

Summing Up: You’re Nothing Special

The show is good for a light watch and for those who want drama but just not too much drama. There are elements of witchcraft and sorcery but not anything too intense. Also, the development of the friendship between the four misfits is fun to watch.

Also, the mysterious yet beautiful sceneries are really beautiful to watch throughout the show.

So, watch it if you’re looking for something to finish within a day and need to pass time because that’s the kind of entertainment that this show will bring to you.

You’re Nothing Special is available to stream on Netflix.
